This paper reports on a novel, simple yet reliable, unbalanced SOI Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer architecture based on 1.2 μm CMOS process and adapted post-processing for the waveguide sidewalls. The fabricated electro-optical device is based on multip ...

The present paper is concerned with the mechanically extremely sensitive reflection switching concept of a free-space wave impinging on an array of dielectric or semiconductor pillars. Splitting the pillars of a 2D periodic array in its resonant reflection ...

Background An accurate understanding of the electrical interaction between retinal prostheses and retinal tissue is important to design effective devices. Previous studies have used modelling approaches to simulate electric fields generated by epiretinal p ...

Active control of ion transport plays important roles in chemical and biological analytical processes. Nanofluidic systems hold the promise for such control through electrostatic interaction between ions and channel surfaces. Most existing experiments rely ...

This paper reports a novel impedance cytometer design, easily integrable with dielectrophoretic focusing using a simple fabrication process with a single metal layer. Patterning of electrodes recessed in lateral channels – so-called “liquid electrodes” – allows the use of large electrodes while keeping a good spatial resolution. This larger area allows measurements at low frequencies, down to 1 kHz. It also decreases the current density, leading to electrodes more robust against electrochemical degradation.

We provide a common theoretical framework reuniting specific models for the Ca2+-alginate system and general reaction diffusion theory along with experimental validation on a microfluidic chip. As a starting point, we use a set of nonlinear, partial differ ...

In future High Energy Physics detectors, the coverage of large surfaces with silicon pixel chip sensors poses a challenge for the sensors positioning, for their cooling, assembly, and interconnection. The use of a cooling substrate on which the sensors are ...

We have fabricated a microfluidic device based on a novel geometrical arrangement of lateral metal electrodes and a patterned insulator. We have used the concept of insulator-based "electrodeless" dielectrophoresis to achieve focusing and continuous separation of dielectric particles flowing down a channel. The novelty consists of generating several electric fields in the structure which allow getting multiple opposite dielectrophoresis with a controllable position of equilibrium. Two and three dielectropho

The ability to control and pump high ionic strength fluids inside microchannels forms a major advantage for clinical diagnostics and drug screening processes, where high conductive biological and physiological buffers are used. Despite the known potential ...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common motor neuron disease. ALS is believed to be a non-cell autonomous condition, as other cell types, including astrocytes, have been implicated in disease pathogenesis. Hence, to facilitate the developmen ...

In this work we present the formation of micrometre-sized lipid vesicles and tubes with perfectly homogeneous diameter and extraordinary length. The method is a novel approach for unconventional fabrication of soft-matter microstructured devices based on t ...

A description of ion transport through geometrically defined nanoslits is presented. It is characterized by the effective surface charge density and was obtained by impedance spectroscopy measurements of electrolytes with different physico-chemical propert ...

We present here Al2O3/W hetero-structured nanopore membranes which function as native and electrical field tunable nanofluidic diodes. A typical membrane is 100×100 μm2 in size with pore density of ∼ 20/μm2. The nanopores are 26 nm in diameter and 400 nm i ...

Microfluidic devices are increasingly used to perform biological experiments on a single-cell basis. However, long-term stability of cell positions is still an issue. A novel biocompatible method for cell entrapment and release on a microchip is presented. ...

We present a new flexible microfabricated polyimide-based platinum array of 3D “tissue coupled electrodes” (TCEs) applied for local stimulation of the chick retinal photoreceptor layer and simultaneous patch clamp recording from a single retinal ganglion c ...

Cardiomyocyte alignment in myocardium tissue plays a significant role in the physiological, electrical, and mechanical functions of the myocardium. It remains, however, difficult to align cardiac cells in a 3D in vitro heart model. This paper proposes a si ...

This article reports the grafting-to in melt of amino and carboxy-terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) onto ultrathin nanoporous silicon nitride membranes (NSiNMs) with a mean pore size of 85 +/- 15 nm functionalized respectively with a self-ass ...

We present a microfluidic device capable of separating platelets from other blood cells in continuous flow using dielectrophoresis field-flow-fractionation. The use of hydrodynamic focusing in combination with the application of a dielectrophoretic force a ...

The Poisson limit is a major problem for the isolation of single cells in different single-cell technologies and applications. In droplet-based single-cell assays, a scheme that is increasingly popular, the intrinsic randomness during single-cell encapsula ...

Millimeter to centimeter-sized injectable neural scaffolds based on macroporous cryogels are presented. The polymer-scaffolds are made from alginate and carboxymethyl-cellulose by a novel simple one-pot cryosynthesis. They allow surgical sterility by means ...
