An innovative method for fabrication and rapid prototyping of high-aspect ratio micromechanical components in photoresist is discussed. The photoresist is an epoxy-negative-tone resist, called SU-8, which can be structured to more than 2 mm in thickness by UV exposure. Small gears of 530 mu m in diameter and 200 mu m in thickness have been realized in this photoplastic and their functionality has been demonstrated. In addition a process called MIMOTEC(TM) (MIcroMOlds TEChnology) has been established for the

Microfluidic system comprising a space (0207) for containing a liquid and at least one lateral chamber (0201) in communication with said space, said lateral chamber containing a metal electrode (0204). The lateral chamber and the space are designed to be f ...

We describe a multiplexing technology, named Evalution, based on novel digitally encoded microparticles in microfluidic channels. Quantitative multiplexing is becoming increasingly important for research and routine clinical diagnostics, but fast, easy-to- ...

Combining deflective dielectrophoretic barriers with controlled pressure driven liquid flows in microfluidic devices allows accurate handling of particles such as biological cells in suspensions. Working towards cell-based lab-on-a-chip applications, a pla ...

Many microvalves have already been designed and developed. Two types can be found: passive check valves and active valves. However, for some applications, it is needed to open a flow channel only once in order, for example, to trigger a mixing reaction on a micro-bioreactor or to deliver drug sample in smart micropills. In this paper, a new simple one-shot microvalve for single-use applications will be described.

In this review we present a unified approach for single cell dielectric spectroscopy. Impedance spectroscopy and dielectrophoretic cell sorting, current microtechnologies applied in electrical analysis of single cells are discussed based on their closely r ...

Recent advances in remote powering and telemetry permitted the use of sensors inside body. A few studies have been already done on smart knee prostheses, but all focused on monitoring the in-vivo contact forces and moments. A smart design, compatible with ...

The design, fabrication and characterization of CMOS-compatible optoelectronic devices is discussed. All devices are fabricated on silicon on insulator (SOI) substrates which makes them suitable for three-dimensional (3-D) telecommunication photonic integr ...

We present a novel concept for the controlled trapping and releasing of beads and cells in a PDMS microfluidic channel without obstacles present around the particle or in the channel. The trapping principle relies on a two-level microfluidic configuration: ...

In this paper we describe new ways to realise micro-channels. The used technologies are based on a novel thick-film photoplastic, the SU-8. This photoresist has outstanding properties, allowing the realisation of high aspect ratio microstructures. It is a simple and low-cost fabrication process. The micro channels developed in this work it will be used for the realisation of thermal flow-sensors.

Carbon-electrode dielectrophoresis (carbon-DEP) is demonstrated here as an alternative to more traditional DEP techniques. Carbon-DEP combines advantages of metal-electrode and insulator-based DEP by using low-cost fabrication techniques and low voltages f ...

We present a MEMS infrared spectrometer for selective and quantitative chemical gas analysis. It contains a tunable optical filter of porous silicon that allows to measure the infrared absorption of a gas mixture at different wavelengths serially with only ...

In their article, ‘‘AC frequency characteristics of coplanar impedance sensors as design parameters’’, Hong et al.1 present an analytical model for the calculation of the resistance between two electrodes in a microchannel. However, their measurements fit ...
