This paper is associated with a video winner of a 2019 American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) Gallery of Fluid Motion Award for work presented at the DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion. The original video is available online at the Gallery o ...

We report on the microfabrication and testing of a chip- scale plasma light source. The device consists of a stack of three anodically bonded Pyrex wafers, which hermetically enclose a gas-filled cavity containing interdigitated Aluminum electrodes. When t ...

An innovative technology for the realization of key elements of a microfabricated reduction unit is presented. In view of integrating the functions of gear, pinion and axle into one element, multilevel metal electroplating in a negative dry film resist mould (Riston) is used. Easier processing, inherent planarization for multilevel 3-D structures, vertical sidewalls and high thicknesses (20-50 mu m/level) are shown to be the main key features of dry films. To demonstrate the process feasibility, a gear and

The invention relates to a microfluidic device (3) comprising: - an inlet channel (31) having an inlet configured to be operatively connected with a droplet source (2) wherein the inlet channel (31) has a width wi and height hi; and - an outlet channel wit ...

We present a microfluidic platform for the synthesis of monodisperse chitosan based nanoparticles via self-assembly at physiological pH. The resultant nanoparticles are shown to encapsulate hydrophobic anticancer drugs while providing a sustainable release profile with high tunability.

In this paper a new method for gyroscopic sensitivity evaluation of a vibrating angular rate sensor is presented. This method is used to evaluate the angular rate sensitivity of a four-beam-bridge gyroscope realized at IMT Neuchatel [ii. The frequency splitting between the excitation and the detection mode due to mechanical mode coupling is investigated. A design variant with optimized dimensions is proposed in order to reduce frequency splitting and increase the angular rate sensitivity. (C) 1997 Elsevier

We discuss both limitations and potentialities of micromechanical devices based on simple microtechnologies. We briefly review flow sensors and their applications. Underlying technologies and prospective applications are discussed.

This work reports on the design, fabrication, and characterization of CMOS pixels for subretinal implants, which seems to be an effective way to recover visual capabilities in some types of blindness. Two possible approaches are presented for CMOS pixel im ...

This paper describes the characterization of a home-made negative photoresist developed by IBM. This resist, called SU-8, can be produced with commercially available materials. Three blends were prepared for this article and some of its optical and mechanical properties are presented. One of its numerous advantages is the broad range of thicknesses which can be obtained in one spin: from 750 nm to 450 mu m with a conventional spin coater. The resist is exposed with a standard UV aligner and has an outstandi

An analytical solution is presented for the electric field between two facing strip electrodes situated in a microchannel, as frequently used in impedance cytometry applications. The measured change in resistance as induced by a 5 mm bead moving through th ...

We present a particle-sorting device based on the opposition of dielectrophoretic forces. The forces are generated by an array of electrode chambers located in both sidewalls of a main flow channel. Particles with different dielectric response perceive dif ...

We present a microfluidic device where micro- and nanoparticles can be continuously functionalized in flow. This device relies on an element called particle exchanger, which allows for particles to be taken from one medium and exposed to some reagent while ...

The following paper describes a sacrificial layer method for the manufacturing of microfluidic devices in polyimide and SU-8. The technique uses heat-depolymerizable polycarbonates embedded in polyimide or SU-8 for the generation of microchannels and seale ...

Arsenic and other pollutants are often present in trace amounts in drinking water in a number of countries. In aqueous solutions the sensitivity of arsenic-responsive bacterial bioreporters is far better than the performance of chemical field test kits. Ho ...

We report a recent breakthrough to control profile angle for SiO2 Deep Anisotropic Dry Etching (SDADE). Our study reveals that gas residence time is the key parameter to control profile angle. Moreover, we show that it is possible to control profile angle, ...

We report on the fabrication and testing of a chip-scale plasma light source. The device consists of a stack of three anodically bonded Pyrex wafers, which hermetically enclose a gas-filled cavity in which electrodes are used to ignite a low power (≪500 mW ...

Within an ongoing project on controlled single-cell electroporation in microfluidic chips [1], a platform permitting accurate particle and fluid handling is being developed. This paper describes cell immersion as a practical demonstration of that platform. As an application, on-chip viability tests were conducted.
