To study bone adaptation to detraining in growing rats, nine weeks-old immature female Wistar rats (n=110) were subjected to treadmill running programs (30 or 60 minutes-a-day) for up to 15 weeks, followed by unrestricted cage activities for the subsequent 15 weeks. The results revealed that (1) the cross-sectional area and mechanical properties of the midshaft bone significantly increased in response to running exercise, (2) its structural properties remained unchanged after the cessation of exercise, wher

Patellar fracture and anterior knee pain remain major complications after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Patient-specific finite element (FE) models should help improve understanding of these complications through estimation of joint and bone mechanics. Ho ...

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that mechanical properties of artificial osteochondral constructs can be improved by a tissue-engineered zone of calcification at the bone-hydrogel interface. Experimental push-off tests were performed ...

The initial stability of cementless femoral components is crucial for the long-term success of total hip arthroplasty. This has been reported in animal and clinical studies. Until now, the stability was evaluated by the measurement of relative micromotion ...

The goal of this study was to develop a method that identifies optimal elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, porosity and permeability values for mechanically stressed bone substitute. It was hypothesized that porous bone substitute that favors the transport o ...

Background Total ankle replacement is associated to a high revision rate. To improve implant survival, the potential advantage of prostheses with fixed bearing compared to mobile bearing is unclear. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis th ...

Hypothesis: During total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), humeral head subluxation may be difficult to manage. Furthermore, there is a risk for postoperative recurrence of subluxation, affecting the outcome of TSA. An accurate evaluation of the subluxation is ...

An obvious means to improve the fixation of a cancellous bone screw is to augment the surrounding bone with cement. Previous studies have shown that bone augmentation with Calcium Phosphate (CaP) cement significantly improves screw fixation. Nevertheless, ...

A biomechanical model of the human shoulder complex is proposed for quasi-static and dynamic estimation of the muscle forces and joint reaction forces in the glenohumeral joint. The model bases itself on the Garner & Pandy model but adds a dynamic layer. T ...

The interfacial micromotion is closely associated to the long-term success of cementless hip prostheses. Various techniques have been proposed to measure them, but only a few number of points over the stem surface can be measured simultaneously. In this pa ...

Purpose Concerns remain about potential increased wear with dual mobility cups related to the multiple articulations involved in this specific design of implant. This finite element analysis study aimed to compare polyethylene (PE) wear between dual mobili ...

Patella-related complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain a major clinical concern. Previous studies have suggested that increased postoperative patellar bone strain could be related to such complications, but there is limited knowledge on p ...

Background: Articular surfaces reconstruction is essential in total shoulder arthroplasty. Because of the limited glenoid bone support, thin glenoid component could improve anatomical reconstruction, but adverse mechanical effects might appear. Methods: Wi ...

A clear and rigorous definition of muscle moment-arms in the context of musculoskeletal systems modelling is presented, using classical mechanics and screw theory. The definition provides an alternative to the tendon excursion method, which can lead to inc ...

BACKGROUND: Supraspinatus deficiency is the most frequent and important problem associated to rotator cuff pathologies. It reduces shoulder stability and can lead to osteoarthritis. The goal of this study was to develop a numerical model of the shoulder to ...

Background. Reversed shoulder arthroplasty is an accepted treatment for glenohumeral arthritis associated to rotator cuff deficiency. For most reversed shoulder prostheses, the baseplate of the glenoid component is uncemented and its primary stability is p ...

The three-dimensional (3D) correction of glenoid erosion is critical to the long-term success of total shoulder replacement (TSR). In order to characterise the 3D morphology of eroded glenoid surfaces, we looked for a set of morphological parameters useful ...

Humeral head translations (HHT) play a crucial role in the glenohumeral (GH) joint function. The available shoulder musculoskeletal models developed based on inverse dynamics however fall short of predicting the HHT. This study aims at developing a simulat ...

Introduction: In total hip arthroplasty, cup medialisation with compensatory increase of femoral offset has been proposed to increase the moment arms of abductor muscles. However, this technique is associated with a loss of acetabular bone stock. Previous ...

Background: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humeral capitellum is an important cause of elbow disability in young athletes. Large and unstable lesions sometimes require joint reconstruction with osteochondral autograft. Several approaches have been ...
