This paper compares four sensor placement strategies which differ according to their evaluation criteria (EC). The first involves the minimisation of the expected number of candidate models, and the second is based on maximising joint entropy. The first me ...

Developed economies depend on complex and extensive systems of infrastructure to maintain economic prosperity and quality of life. In recent years, the implementation of Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems on full-scale bridges has increased. The go ...

Adaptive structures can modify their geometry and internal forces through sensing and mechanical actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous work has shown that well-conceived adaptive design strategies achieve subst ...

This paper presents a new model-free data-interpretation approach for damage detection of bridges using long-term monitoring data. The approach combines two model-free methods: Moving Principal Component Analysis (MPCA) and Robust Regression Analysis (RRA) ...

Real behavior of existing structures is usually associated with large uncertainty that is often covered by the use of conservative models and code practices for the evaluation of remaining fatigue lives. In order to make better decisions related to retrofi ...

Several long-span, prestressed, segmental box girder bridges were built in the early 1980s and many of them are affected by long-term residual deformations. Although some models have been proposed to describe their structural behavior, several uncertaintie ...

The aim of model-based structural identification is to make sense of monitoring data in order to improve knowledge of the real behaviour of structures. Common use of structural-identification techniques involves an assumption of independent zero-mean Gauss ...

Biomimetic structures interact with their environment, change their properties, learn and self-repair, thereby providing properties that are similar to living organisms. Interactions with the environment involve unique challenges in the field of computatio ...

Earthquake-design approaches in regions with low to medium seismic hazard often focus on the protection of inhabitants. Therefore, some structural damage is accepted. In addition, large parts of the building stock have usually been built without considerin ...

Ring modules are tensegrity systems that include a single strut circuit and recently, they have been shown to be viable systems for pedestrian bridges. Furthermore, their shape can be controlled using cable actuation. This paper focuses on the deployment of a pentagonal tensegrity-ring module. A geometric study is conducted to identify the deployment-solution space without strut contact. Deployment paths and actuation requirements are explored. The structural response of the module during deployment is anal

Despite the recent advances in sensor technologies and data-acquisition systems, interpreting measurement data for structural monitoring remains a challenge. Furthermore, because of the complexity of the structures, materials used, and uncertain environmen ...

Tensegrity structures are lightweight structures composed of cables in tension and struts in compression. Since tensegrity systems exhibit geometrically nonlinear behavior, finding optimal structural designs is difficult. This paper focuses on the use of s ...

Even though computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) has been used to simulate airflow in cities, accurate results are not always obtained because of difficulties related to defining the correct set of values of parameters, including boundary conditions. This pa ...

After a damaging earthquake, assessment of the residual seismic capacity is required for large parts of the building stock. Increased vulnerability of structures together with the threat of immediate aftershocks call for rapid and objective decision making ...

Results of two doctoral theses, one using a model-based approach and the other using model-free methods, are summarized. Both included case studies of full-scale bridges. While model-based approaches are appropriate for individual infrastructure-management ...

The construction industry is a major contributor to the consumption of mined material resources and to the global energy demand. It is thus important to consider energy and material efficiency criteria for the design of civil structures. Through sensing an ...

In order to achieve reliable information about deterioration, it is important to differentiate between changes in structural behaviour due to service loading (temperature, wind and traffic) and changes resulting from damage when interpreting measurement da ...

Designing a measurement system is usually performed using only engineering judgment and experience. Thus, it may result in either a large amount of redundant data or insufficient data leading to ambiguous results. This paper presents a systematic approach ...

The production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions in the decay channel with two oppositely charged leptons (e(+/-)mu(-/+), e(+)e(-), or mu(+)mu(-)). The measurement is performed using 138 ...

Adaptive structures are sensed and actuated to perform tasks such as modifying their internal load-path in response to external actions to maintain optimal performance. Shape control and load-path redirection have been investigated to counteract the effect ...
