Tensegrity structures are spatial systems composed of tension and compression components in a self-equilibrated prestress stable state. Although the concept is over 60 years old, few tensegrity-based structures have been used for engineering purposes. Tens ...

A large number of buildings in regions with low to medium seismic hazard have been designed without considering earthquake actions. Retrofitting of all buildings that fail to meet modern code requirements is economically, technically and environmentally un ...

In many cable structures, special types of joints are designed to allow cables to slide freely along the joints. Thus, a number of discrete cable elements are substituted by a single continuous cable that slides over multiple nodes. Continuous cables are e ...

The construction industry contributes to more than a third of the global energy demand and consumes almost half of all mined material resources. It is thus important to include energy and material efficiency criteria for the design of civil structures. Ada ...

Optimal performance of civil infrastructure is an important aspect of liveable cities. A judicious combination of physics-based models with monitoring data in a validated methodology that accounts for uncertainties is explored in this paper. This methodolo ...

Tensegrities are spatial, reticulated and lightweight structures that are increasingly investigated as structural solutions for active and deployable structures. Tensegrity systems are composed only of axially loaded elements providing opportunities for actuation and deployment through changing element lengths. In cable-based actuation strategies, the deficiency of having to control too many cable elements can be overcome by connecting several cables. However, replacing sequences of cable elements by contin

Model updating is useful for improving structural performance assessments. This paper examines an important assumption of traditional model-updating approaches. This assumption requires the error independence between points where predictions and measuremen ...

In sensed buildings, information related to occupant movement helps optimize functions such as security, energy management, and caregiving. Due to privacy needs, non-intrusive sensing approaches for tracking occupants inside buildings, such as vibration se ...

Interpreting measurement data to extract meaningful information for damage detection is a challenge for continuous monitoring of structures. This paper presents an evaluation of two model-free data interpretation methods: moving principal component analysi ...

Monitoring and interpreting structural response using structural-identification methodologies improves understanding of civil-infrastructure behavior. New sensing devices and inexpensive computation has made model-based data interpretation feasible in engi ...

The growing importance of economic and environmental issues associated with the replacement of transportation infrastructure creates a demand for new techniques that are able to predict accurately the behaviour of existing structures. While monitoring stru ...

The aim of structural performance monitoring is to infer the state of a structure from measurements and thereby support decisions related to structural management. Complex structures may be equipped with hundreds of sensors that measure quantities such as ...

New methods are required for sustainable and economical management of bridges. Efficient management can be achieved by a detailed understanding of bridge behavior through monitoring and model-based data interpretation. This paper presents a methodology to ...

Measurements from load tests may lead to numerical models that better reflect structural behavior. This kind of system identification is not straightforward due to important uncertainties in measurement and models. Moreover, since system identification is ...

Knowledge of the compressive strength evolution of concrete is critical for activities such as stripping formwork, construction scheduling and pre-stressing operations. Although there are several procedures for predicting concrete compressive strength, rel ...

Deployable structures are structures that transform their shape from a compact state to an extended in-service position. Structures composed of tension elements that surround compression elements in equilibrium are called tensegrity structures. Tensegritie ...

The management of existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, aging and climate change. Civil infrastructure often has hidden reserve capacity because of conservative approaches used in design and during constructi ...

Identification of occupant presence and location inside buildings is essential to functional goals such as security, healthcare, and energy management. Floor-vibration measurements, induced by footstep impacts, provide a non-intrusive sensing method for oc ...

When system identification methodologies are used to interpret measurement data taken from structures, uncertainty dependencies are in many cases unknown due to model simplifications and omissions. This paper presents how error-domain model falsification r ...
