Tensegrity structures are composed of cables and struts in a prestressed self-equilibrium. Although tensegrity first appeared in the 1950s, it is seldom used in civil engineering. This paper focuses on the design aspects of a deployable tensegrity-hollow-r ...

For the assessment of structural behaviour, many approaches are available to compare model predictions with measurements. However, few approaches include uncertainties along with dependencies associated with models and observations. In this paper, an error ...

Tensegrity structures are spatial self-stressed pin jointed structures where compression components (struts) are surrounded by tension elements. This paper describes a near full-scale deployable tensegrity footbridge that deploys from both sides and connec ...

Tensegrity structures are spatial reticulated structures composed of cables and struts. A tension-compression equilibrium leads to lightweight systems that change shape through length changes in their members. Active members thus control several degrees of freedom simultaneously. Tensegrity-ring modules are transformable circuit-pattern modules. The linear combination of tensegrity rings has been shown to be viable for a footbridge application. Shape transformations of a ¼ scale four-ring-module tensegrity-

This paper presents a measurement system design methodology that incorporates damage scenarios. One of the goals of a measurement system is to detect damage for safety and for management of maintenance activities. This study builds upon previous research a ...

Increasingly, uncertainties are explicitly considered for important engineering tasks. Often, little case-specific information is available for characterizing these uncertainties. Uniform distributions are an easy way to describe errors in absence of more ...

Model-based data interpretation has the potential to increase knowledge of structural behavior and support asset management. Models are usually conservative and contain many parameters and sources of systematic uncertainty, which need to be taken into acco ...

Model-based data-interpretation techniques are widely used to identify the behavior of structures. These techniques exploit information provided by in-situ measurements to make diagnosis related to structural performance. In the context of model-based infr ...

Deployable structures belong to a special class of moveable structures that are capable of form and size change. Controlling movement of deployable structures is important for successful deployment, in-service adaptation and safety. In this paper, measurem ...

Pressurized fluid-distribution networks are strategic elements of infrastructure. In the case of fresh-water distribution networks, advanced sensor-based diagnostic methodologies have the potential to provide enhanced management support. Since a significan ...

Sensing in the built environment has the potential to reduce asset management expenditure and contribute to extending useful service life. In the built environment, measurements are usually performed indirectly; effects are measured remote from their cause ...

Measurement data interpretation has the potential to improve asset management through quantification of reserve capacity and execution of well-engineered interventions. Many recent proposals for data interpretation that include uncertainty are not appropri ...

Tensegrities are lightweight space reticulated structures composed of cables and struts. Stability is provided by the self-stress state between tensioned and compressed elements. Tensegrity systems have in general low structural damping, leading to challen ...

A good measurement system improves capability to identify the behavior of civil engineering structures. This paper presents a measurement-system design approach for continuous monitoring of structures. This approach performs two tasks: (1) determining the ...
