This paper proposes and validates a daylighting design sequence for sidelit spaces. Since the design sequence uses the daylight factor as a performance metric, it is aimed towards spaces that primarily receive diffuse daylight. It should be complemented by ...

Net energy import of Switzerland corresponds to about 13 BCHF (petroleum, uranium, etc.) each year. According to the energy perspective 2035 defined by Swiss Federal Office Energy, the energy import should be reduced to 7.3 BCHF. Meeting the goals defined ...

Well-designed electrochromic (EC) glazing control can improve the energy performance of buildings and visual comfort of occupants in highly glazed buildings. This paper designed and demonstrated a compact integrated EC glazing automation system to control ...

Studies have shown that the exposure to daylight can have substantial visual/non-visual benefits for building occupants. To optimise daylighting provision while maintaining a comfortable visual environment, daylighting control systems have been investigate ...

Despite much research on the ecological impacts of urbanization, we still do not know what development patterns are most effective in supporting ecological function. In particular, it is as yet unclear if compact urban forms are ecologically more favourabl ...

Integrated energy systems such as multi energy hubs which combines different energy conversion technologies and storage is recently getting popular. These systems possess the potential to integrate distributed renewable energy sources with a minimum impact ...

The expanding design interest in outdoor comfort design is today supported by a few software tools. Given their different user-friendliness, modelling environments and simulation engines, a rational inquiry is how they are integrated into the digital desig ...

When modelling outdoor microclimates, researchers and designers need to be aware of the modelling capabilities and limitations of tools. This comparative study attempts to understand how tools such as CitySim Pro, ENVI-met, RayMan, Grasshopper plug-ins Hon ...

A simulation tool (EcoSim) has been developed to analyse the economic and environmental aspects of the integration of several energy conversion units. For a given investment over 25 years, the tool calculates the self-consumption rate, the autonomy level, ...

Electric lighting is responsible for up to one third of an office building’s electricity needs. Making daylight more available in office buildings can not only contribute to significant energy savings but also enhance the occupants’ performance and wellbei ...

A novel glazing system consisting of a polymer layer with embedded micro compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs), which is attached to a glass pane of glazing, is proposed. It aims to reduce the energy consumption due to cooling in buildings, provide dayli ...

An integrated approach is presented in this study to design electrical hubs combining optimization, multi-criterion assessment and decision making. Levelized Energy Cost (LEC), Initial Capital Cost (ICC), Grid Integration Level (GI), Levelized CO2 emission ...

A bottom-up modelling approach together with a set of calibration methodologies is presented to predict residential building occupants' time-dependent activities, for use in dynamic building simulations. The stochastic model to predict activity chains is c ...

With more than half the world population now urbanised, urban metabolism – defined as the throughput and transformation of material and energy flows to sustain human life in urban settlements – is responsible for consuming the majority of global resources ...

To understand the urban environment from a meteorological perspective in order to design better and more sustainable neighbourhoods, an open-source and low-cost meteorological device was developed and tested at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne ...

Climate changes induce warmer climate with stronger and more frequent extreme events. Due to the uncertain nature of climate, accurate simulation of future conditions is impossible and a major challenge is the selection of climate data in the impact assess ...

Multilayered inteference filters of dielectric thin films have been designed for the application as energy-efficient coloration of collector cover glasses. The optical behavior of the designed multilayers is analyzed by computer simulations yielding the CI ...

A reduction by 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions as well as a similar decrease for the final energy consumption is needed to respect the energy strategies and climate objectives at the European scale. To address this issue, we analysed the energy demand ...

This paper describes an algorithm for the simulation of occupant presence, to be later used as an input for future occupant behaviour models within building simulation tools. By considering occupant presence as an inhomogeneous Markov chain interrupted by ...
