Nanoporous SiO2 and nanocomposite MgF2:SiO2 coatings have been deposited by sol gel dip-coating in a particle-free atmosphere. The refractive index of the prepared nanostructured thin films is determined from spectrophotometric data. In both cases, signifi ...

The extraction of shallow geothermal energy using borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) is a promising approach for decarbonisation of the heating sector. However, a dense deployment of BHEs may lead to thermal interference between neighboring boreholes and ther ...

Improving indoor lighting conditions at the workplace has the potential to support proper circadian entrainment of hormonal rhythms, sleep, and well-being. We tested the effects of optimized dynamic daylight and electric lighting on circadian phase of mela ...

This article presents the results of a satisfaction assessment recently carried out amongst occupants of office rooms equipped with Anidolic Daylighting Systems. Questionnaires and complementary personal interviews were used to reveal which typical office ...

To understand the opportunities and challenges of large shares of solar photovoltaics (PV) in our electricity mix, various large-scale studies of PV potential on building roofs have been conducted in recent years. The use of different datasets, methods and ...

To assess the PV-potential on rooftops for decentralized electricity supply in Switzerland, the potential is compared with the following urban-size parameters: (a) urban population, (b) number of buildings, (c) the cumulative building ground-floor area, an ...

Blinds are usually installed on building façade to improve the visual and thermal comfort of the oc-cupants. They are now often linked to an automat-ed system that helps control the glare and decrease overheating. These automated systems are linked to a we ...

While most current building simulation tools consider occupants as predictable robots the true nature of human behaviour is more complex. This article describes a set of stochastic models aimed at capturing this complexity by decoupling occupant presence f ...

This study evaluates the impact of urban planning decisions regarding building stock on energy system design and operation. Three urban planning scenarios are considered for an archetype neighbourhood in Nablus in Palestine. The distinguishing difference i ...

Flexibility of the energy system plays a vital role when integrating non-dispatchable renewable energy technologies. However, flexibility of the energy system has been often discussed only focusing on the operation of the energy system. This study extends ...

The „Green Lighting“ project, started in 2006 at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), explores different ways to combine modern day- and artificial lighting technologies. The main objective of ...

In part stimulated by the computer game industry, reasonable progress has been made in the dynamic modelling of urban growth and land use change. However, sustainability considerations in this work remain to be addressed. Yet the environmental impact of ci ...

Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) are advanced daylighting systems that are placed on the upper part of a window to improve the indoor daylight distribution within rooms. Due to their double function of daylight redirection and solar protection, they are ...

Climate change is having and will have drastic consequences for high density populated areas such as cities. There is thus a need to develop more tools to evaluate new strategies for adaptation to and mitigation of changing temperatures. Additional functio ...

A shading device (D.1, D.2) is configured to be integrated into a façade of a building, wherein the shading device (D.1, D.2) comprises an imaging system (3) configured to create images of an outside view of the building. ...
