Centred on research and development in Solar Energy Applications to the Built Environment, the International Conference CISBAT 2007, organised every other year on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne/Switzerland, once ...

The lighting environment at indoor workplaces is important not only to provide vision and visual comfort, but also for light's direct influence on human physiology, cognitive performance and mood. The purpose of this ongoing study is to investigate the imp ...

Making daylight more available in buildings is highly desirable for reasons of energy efficiency, visual comfort, occupant well-being and health. The Anidolic Integrated Ceiling (AIC) is a highly efficient daylighting system, designed to gather and redirec ...

Enhancing lighting conditions in institutions for individuals with dementia improves their sleep, circadian rhythms and well-being. Here, we report first findings that exposure to brighter light during daytime may support the immune response to the annual ...

Dynamic simulation programes require hourly values of solar radiation and ambient temperature forming large files, which are usually difficult to handle with available personal computers (PC). This report describes stochastic models of these variables which have been constructed to overcome this difficulty. They are based on Markov chains and autoregressive processes, determined using multi-year hourly data of both variables. A validation of the model has been carried out for five different Swiss locations.

Besides providing a more efficient energy use, a large scale application of solar energy technologies in the urban context will be required in the upcoming decades to achieve a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the biosphere. Three different urban sites, representative of three of the largest Swiss cities (Basel, Geneva and Lausanne), were examined in order to assess their respective solar potential.

The need for reduction in CO2 emissions to mitigate global warming has resulted in increasing use of renewable energy sources. In urban areas, solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment on existing rooftops is one of the most viable sustainable energy resources. T ...

This paper presents a novel method to study how well non-imaging daylight collectors pipe diffuse daylight into long horizontal funnels for illuminating deep buildings. Forward ray tracing is used to derive luminous intensity distributions curves (LIDC) of ...

Airflow rates, hence energy consumption, are directly affected by the amount of open area and consequently by the inhabitant behavior with respect to window opening. This report describes stochastic models using Markov chains, and used to generate time series of window and door openings or window opening angles. It is based on data measured on one hand at he LESO and on the other hand by the TNO Delft on 80 identical, 16 openings dwellings located at Schiedam (NL). The models are validated by a comparison o

The „Green Lighting“ project (LESO-PB/EPFL and Swiss Federal Office of Energy) explores different ways to combine advanced day- and artificial lighting technologies for achieving highly energy-efficient office lighting scenarios. This communication gives a ...

The energy hub concept is gradually getting popular due to its capability to integrate renewable energy technologies into the energy grid with a minimum impact. Designing distributed energy hubs is a challenging task due to the coupling of optimum dispatch ...

Mapping the location and size of solar installations in urban areas can be a valuable input for policymakers and for investing in distributed energy infrastructures. Machine Learning techniques, combined with satellite and aerial imagery, allow to overcome ...

All the projected scenarios agree on the immediate necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). This research proposes an analysis on the EPFL campus of all the potential reductions of CO2 emissions: energy refurbishment ...

The goal of this study is to show the feasibility and the interest of the NEUROBAT concepts. The NEUROBAT project aims at exploiting new control techniques, and particularly fuzzy logic and neural networks, in the building control area. Theses techniques are able to identify automatically the thermo-physical characteristics of a building and to learn and predict user's hebaviour. Three main issues are considered in this report.

The recent AR5 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has again stressed on the need for mitigation and adaptation measures to tackle issues related to climate change. Tackling future urban planning and energy efficiency in the building ...

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the transmission properties of fenestration materials, called bi-directional transmission distribution functions (BTDF), which necessitate systematic and accurate measurements. A new type of bi-directional photogoniometer, based on advanced imaging techniques, has been developed to this end; its mechanical concept, the calibration procedures and the first results are presented here.

Complex fenestration systems (CFS) designed to collect and redirect daylight from the sky-vault are generally placed on the upper part of a window in order to improve the distribution of indoor daylight. Due to their additional function as solar protection ...

One of the most promising sustainable energy that can be considered in urban environment is solar energy. A 3D model for solar energy potential on building envelope based on urban LiDAR data was developed in this study. The developed algorithm can be used ...

The purpose of this work is the definition of a representative sky for the Geneva Lake Region (south-west Switzerland). A representative sky is a theoretical blended sky based on the relative occurrence of a subset of the 15 standard general skies suggeste ...
