We propose a novel Eulerian algorithm to compute the changes of a glacier geometry for given mass balances. The surface of a glacier is obtained by solving a transport equation for the volume of fluid (VOF). The surface mass balance is taken into account b ...

The aim of this paper is to present simple but efficient variance reduction methods for CONNFFESSIT-like simulations, extending the ideas of Hulsen et al. [J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 70 (1997) 79-101] and Ottinger et al. [J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 70 (1997) 255-261]. Strongly correlated local ensembles of dumbells were used, and equilibrium ensembles of dumbbells were subtracted. This idea is extended here to non-equilibrium ensembles of dumbbells. The methods are first presented in the frame of the pl

Orthogonal maps are two-dimensional mappings that are solutions of the so-called origami problem obtained when folding a paper. These mappings are piecewise linear, and the discontinuities of their gradient form a singular set composed of straight lines re ...

We present a multi-physics model for the approximation of the coupled system formed by the temperature-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with free surfaces. The main application is the industrial process of shallow laser surface melting (SLSM), for laser p ...

The aim of this paper is to obtain a posteriori error bounds of optimal order in time and space for the linear second-order wave equation discretized by the Newmark scheme in time and the finite element method in space. An error estimate is derived in the ...

Inclinometry with embedded probes is analyzed with a Stokes model of a solid body floating in a fluid with much smaller viscosity for a two-dimensional flow field. The assumption that such a probe behaves like a Lagrangian unit vector is only justified for ...

method) for the time discretization of an unstationary Stokes problem in D c Rd (d = 2,3) given t, f,u0; (P) find (u, p) solution to ult. = u0, ujav = 0 and: au ptAu + V p = f, divu = 0 on (0, T) x D. at Inspired by the analyses of the Backward Euler schem ...

We propose a cheaper version of a posteriori error estimator from Gorynina et al. (Namer. Anal. (2017)) for the linear second-order wave equation discretized by the Newmark scheme in time and by the finite element method in space. The new estimator preserv ...

We address a simplified time-dependent parabolic problem that arises when modeling both viscoelastic fluids and elastic solids in a unified framework. A priori estimates are obtained for the continuous problem. Then implicit and semi-explicit (EVSS) time d ...
