This paper discusses challenges in enabling teleoperation over the Internet for the specific case of real systems which exhibit fast dynamics. A distributed client-server architecture is proposed to provide the necessary level of interactivity for supervision and tuning, without compromising the essential control tasks. Enabling features include real-time simulation and augmented-reality visualization to enhance the user perception of the distant ongoing operations. The proposed approach is illustrated thro

Enabling blended learning scenarios that foster participation and interaction is an important consideration in the design of executive training programs. To investigate this design process, our study focuses on two aspects that are present in such scenario ...

There is an ongoing debate about the fact that educational models of the industrial age are no longer adequate. Future educational models need to provide students with the abilities to solve complex problems as well as to collaborate and interact to genera ...

In this work, we present a motion planning framework for automated vehicles to drive safely through intersections despite occlusions and the uncertain behavior of the surrounding vehicles. A context representation based on probably-free gaps is proposed as ...

In order to improve user experience and to foster novel ideas, some voices in the HCI community have argued to break fundamental design rules, an approach well known in the art community. In this paper, we use this radical approach to design a playful mobi ...

This paper presents a new collaborative e-learning system based on a real-time synchronized communication among virtual laboratories. This original approach provides a new tool which integrates virtual laboratories inside a synchronous collaborative e-lear ...

Type 1 Patients with Diabetes (Type 1 PwDs) have to frequently adjust their insulin dosage to keep their Blood Glucose concentration (BG) within normal bounds. Meal intakes represent the most important disturbance that has to be accounted for. Its effect d ...

This chapter presents challenges in deploying remote and virtual laboratories as open educational resources with application to engineering education, as well as current trends in using Web 2.0 technologies to enable broader adoption and ease of development. The Spanish initiative to establish a common remote and virtual experimentation infrastructure between various universities is presented as an example of an open laboratory network. This example shows the benefit of sharing complex educational resources

Online experiments have been available for more than a decade. The integration of online experiments to collaborative environments is more recent. The wealth of client application/environments, the versatility of possible interaction protocols/technologies ...

This paper presents how platforms initially designed to enable the construction of personal learning environments can help teachers and learners to aggregate their own MOOCs from resources freely available in the Cloud under Creative Commons licenses. Comp ...

Despite the traction gained by the open data movement and the rise of big data and learning analytics in education, there is limited support for researchers in education to generate, access, and share experimental data using openly-available digital educat ...

Social processes play an important role in teachers' ongoing professional learning: through interactions with peers and experts to solve problems or co-create materials, teachers internalize knowledge developed in their communities. However, these social p ...

Remote experimentation facilities have been accessible from the Internet for more than a decade. However, sustainability of such services is not adequately ensured in many academic institutions. The major challenge lies in moving from a single research set ...

This paper presents the Smart Device specification to interface with remote labs. To encourage the broader sharing of remote labs, the Smart Device paradigm decouples the client from the server and provides well-defined interfaces between client and server ...

In this paper we present a collision avoidance system based on visual detection. Our hardware consists of a Hummingbird quadrotor equipped with a large red marker with two built-in fish-eye cameras. Fusion of the measurements from the two cameras is done u ...

The recent rise in both popularity and performance of large language models has garnered considerable interest regarding their applicability to education. Technologies like ChatGPT, which can engage in human-like dialog, have already disrupted educational ...

Introducing automatic control has always been challenging. As a technology, control is generally hidden by the enclosing application. As a methodology, control is often seen as a theoretical subject. Therefore, to grasp the interest of both practitioners e ...

This paper discusses the potential role of social software in supporting teamwork and collaborative project management in higher education. Based on the fact that social software has been widely spread among young students nowadays, using it for collaborat ...

Nowadays, the knowledge economy is growing rapidly. To sustain future growth, more well educated people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are needed. In the Go-Lab project we aim to motivate and orient students from an early age on ...
