This paper suggests several approaches for determining the transient stability of a power network by using an analog VLSI chip for simulating the system behavior. The main advantages of using this method are the much shorter computation time and lower complexity compared to the existing methods that are based on numerical calculations or discrete analog emulators

The EEF utility, which has its headquarters in Fribourg, Switzerland, is planning to install in its new energy management system a robust Schweppe-type Huber GM-state estimator (SHGM). Prior to the installation, the iterative algorithm that implements the estimator has been upgraded to meet the specifications and extensive offline simulations have been carried out on the EEF power network. This power system consists of 3 islands and 33 substations that are interconnected by 60 kV subtransmission lines. The

With the liberalization of the electricity market, the cross-boarder transactions have become more common but set up new problems due to the non-existence of a global interconnected network operator which would have a whole knowledge of such electrical sys ...

The accuracy of state estimators using the Kalman Filter (KF) is largely influenced by the measurement and the process noise covariance matrices. The former can be directly inferred from the available measurement devices whilst the latter needs to be asses ...

The emerging field of power system emulation for real time smart grid management is very demanding in terms of speed and accuracy. This paper provides detailed information about the electronics calibration process of a high-speed power network emulator dedicated to the transient stability analysis of power systems. This emulator uses mixed-signal hardware to model the dynamic behavior of a power network. Special design allows the self-calibration of the analog electronics through successive measurements and

The cross-border trading among electricity markets in an interconnected multi-area system (e.g., in central Europe) and the integration of renewable resources (e.g., wind energy) have remarkably increased in recent years. To efficiently operate such system ...

A coupling of the electrical networks of ENTSO-E and IPS/UPS would result in a power system unprecedented in size and complexity, and potentially could have severe effects on operation and stability.

This paper presents a method for the optimal siting and sizing of energy storage systems (ESSs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) to achieve their dispatchability. The problem formulation accounts for the uncertainty inherent to the stochastic nature ...

This paper presents a genetic algorithm to seek the optimal location of multi-type FACTS devices in a power system. The optimizations are performed on three parameters: the location of the devices, their types and their values. The system loadability is applied as a measure of power system performance. Four different kinds of FACTS controllers are used and modeled for steady-state studies: TCSC, TCPST, TCVR and SVC. Simulations are done on a 118-bus power system for several numbers of devices. Results show

This paper describes the development of a control system and control strategies capable of governing multiple flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices in coordination with load shedding. The main purpose of the presented coordinated control system i ...

This paper joins a series of papers dealing with high-speed power system emulators. It clarifies the last details about the system level of the AC emulation approach by analyzing and quantifying the systematic errors introduced during modeling. Thereby a new optimized generator model has been developed. Its main advantage is improved stability. The functionality of this optimized model is proven by behavioral simulation comparing its results to results of a numerical reference simulator and to the original

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a control algorithm for a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) to level the consumption of a group of prosumers and dispatch their aggregated operation. The control strategy is layered in a tw ...

The study of the dynamics taking place during power system blackouts is a subject that receives continuous attention in view of its inherent complexity and relevant consequences. Within this context, the paper aims at studying the role of the frequency control reserves (FCRs) on the cascading outages and the relevant short-term dynamics associated with the blackout mechanisms. The relationship between the large and small blackout frequency with respect to the value of FCRs is assessed. More in particular, t

The search for an optimal configuration for a distribution network can be viewed by three different approaches based on the implicit enumeration of solutions. The approach called branch exchange seems to avoid the disadvantages of the two others. This approach has allowed the authors to imagine and develop, initially, two descent search strategies. Thereafter, to improve these strategies, they have been transformed to include the principles of an optimization method, called TABU. All strategies have finally

Aggregators have an influential intermediary role to exploit the flexibility of prosumers like smart homes for procuring the required capacity of ancillary services to support power systems. Local generation and consumption uncertainties of prosumers affec ...

The paper proposes a specific algorithm for the pre-estimation filtering of bad data (BD) in PMU-based power systems linear State Estimators (SEs). The approach is framed in the context of the so-called real-time SEs that take advantage of the high measure ...

This paper highlights the increasing need for faster than real-time simulators of the electric power system and shows that microelectronic emulation is a very promising solution to overcoming speed problems of current numerical simulators. Research is focused on two different emulation approaches. Both of them are detailed in this paper and their electronic implementation is shown. Furthermore, the two approaches are compared and their final capabilities are depicted. By doing so, the paper shows that the t

We intend to prove that PMU-based state estimation processes for active distribution networks exhibit unique time determinism and refresh rate that make them suitable to satisfy the time-critical requirements of protections as well as the accuracy requirem ...

Coherency group identification is an integral constituent part of the wider field of reduction techniques in power systems. It consists of separating the machines in the system into groups that feature similar behavior. This paper presents a coherency identification algorithm for dynamic studies. The algorithm combines both modal and time domain techniques in an effort to combine the merits of both approaches. Its outcome is a suggested optimal number of clusters alongside the clustering itself. Tests have

The railway load in Switzerland is expected to increase in the next years. Increasing the capacity of the interconnection between the railway power system and the public grid is a reasonable solution to deal with this problem. This paper proposes a way to find the locations and capacities for new interconnections and the capacity expansion for the existing one. To show the effectiveness of the proposed model, the networks in the Suisse Romande region (French part of Switzerland) is considered as a case stud
