The steady advances of computational methods make model-based optimization an increasingly attractive method for process improvement. Unfortunately, the available models are often inaccurate. The traditional remedy is to update the model parameters, but th ...

Bonvin† †Institut d’Automatique, EPFL, 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland ‡Institut de Genie Chimique, EPFL, 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland Fermentors are often run in a fed-batch manner to avoid the formation of overflow metabolites. At a high growth rate, the most efficient metabolic pathway(s) of certain microorganisms become saturated resulting in overflow metabolite production. These byproducts are undesira

Identification of kinetic models is an important step for the monitoring, control and optimization of chemical and pharmaceutical processes. Furthermore, the availability of a first-principles model often leads to substantial reduction in process developme ...

As a real-time optimization technique, modifier adaptation (MA) has gained much significance in recent years. This is mainly due to the fact that MA can deal explicitly with structural plant-model mismatch and unknown disturbances. MA is an iterative techn ...

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are ubiquitous in eukaryotic signal transduction, and these pathways are conserved in cells from yeast to mammals. They relay extracellular stimuli from the plasma membrane to targets in the cytoplasm and nucleus, initiating diverse responses involving cell growth, mitogenesis, differentiation and stress responses in mammalian cells. Detailed kinetics models of MAPK cascades have been constructed in recent years that are comprised of mixed sets of differe

The identification of reliable reaction and mass-transfer rates is important for building first-principles models of gas-liquid reaction systems. The identification of these rates involves the determination of a model structure (reaction stoichiometry, rate expressions for the reactions and mass transfers) and of the corresponding parameters. The identification of these rate expressions from measured concentrations is a challenging task because of the direct coupling between the reactions and the transfer o

This paper addresses the steady-state optimization of continuous processes in the presence of uncertainty in the form of unknown or time-varying model parameters, structural plant-model mismatch, and disturbances. To address these issues, we assume that ce ...

Lower and upper bounds for a given function are important in many mathematical and engineering contexts, where they often serve as a base for both analysis and application. In this short paper, we derive piecewise linear and quadratic bounds that are stated in terms of the Lipschitz constants of the function and the Lipschitz constants of its partial derivatives, and serve to bound the function's evolution over a compact set. While the results follow from basic mathematical principles and are certainly not

Many practical chemical engineering processes involve a sequence of distinct transient operations, forming multistage systems in which each stage is described by mixed sets of differential and algebraic equations (DAEs). These models usually involve decision variables that must be chosen so as to optimize some performance subject to operational constraints, thus leading to dynamic optimization problems, as well as parameters whose values are not known accurately. The sensitivity analysis of the solutions to

Predictive Control of Unstable Nonminimum-phase Systems K. Guemghar, B. Srinivasan, Ph. Mullhaupt, D. Bonvin ´ Institut d’Automatique, Ecole Polytechnique F´d´rale de Lausanne, ee CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland. Predictive control is a very effective approach for tackling problems with constraints and nonlinear dynamics, especially when the analytical computation of the control law is difficult. Standard predictive control involves predicting the system behavior over a prediction horizon and calculating the inp

This paper presents an input parameterization for dynamic optimization that allows reducing the number of decision variables compared to traditional direct methods. A small number of decision variables is likely to be beneficial for various applications su ...

Abstract of the conference paper The kinetic identification of chemical reaction systems often represents a time-consuming and complex task. This contribution presents an approach that uses rate estimation and feedback linearization to implement ...

Models of chemical reactors can be quite complex as they include information regarding the reactions, the transfer of species between phases, the transfer of energy, and the inlet and outlet flows. Furthermore, the effects of the various phenomena are quit ...

Process monitoring and fault diagnosis are broadly used to control quality and enforce safety compliance in industrial processes. Processes are commonly monitored by online spectroscopy, with either PCA or calibration techniques such as PLS being used to p ...

In industrial polymerization processes, several grades of polymer are frequently produced in the same plant by changing the operating conditions. Transitions between the different grades are rather slow and result in the production of a considerable amount ...

In practice, the quest for the optimal operation of energy systems is complicated by the simultaneous presence of operating constraints, among which the need for producing the power required by the user, and of uncertainty. The latter concept incorporates ...

This paper proposes a variation of the incremental approach to identify reaction and mass-transfer kinetics (rate expressions and the corresponding rate parameters) from concentration measurements for both homogeneous and gas-liquid reaction systems. This ...

In the presence of plant-model mismatch, the estimation of plant gradients is key to the performance of measurement-based iterative optimization schemes. However, gradient estimation requires time-consuming experiments, wherein the plant is sequentially pe ...

Optimal operation of chemical processes is key for meeting productivity, quality, safety and environmental objectives. Both model-based and data-driven schemes are used to compute optimal operating conditions [1]: - The model-based techniques are intu ...
