Increased miniaturization of surgical instruments is essential to successfully perform surgical procedures in restricted areas as in many applications of minimally-invasive surgery. Miniaturization permits increase in dexterity and decrease in access incis ...

This paper investigates a cable transmission to remotely actuate MR compatible robots over a distance of several meters. Such a transmission could be an interesting solution for haptic interfaces for neuroscience studies performing force feedback during fu ...

In haptics, the forces to be displayed vary widely in terms of magnitude and bandwidth. A single actuator can hardly comply with these requirements. It has thus been proposed to combine electrical motors and passive devices in a hybrid actuator to cover a ...

Ligament balancing in total knee arthroplasty is believed to have an important influence on the joint stability and prosthesis lifetime. In order to provide quantitative information and assistance during the ligament balancing phase, a device that intraoperatively measures knee joint forces and moments has been developed.

This paper proposes a novel experimental environ- ment to evaluate multimodal feedback strategies for augmented navigation of the visually impaired. The environment consists of virtual obstacles and walls, an optical tracking system and a simple device wit ...

This paper investigates sensorimotor adaptation strategies of sagittal postural control in healthy subjects under kinematic constraints. A passive exoskeleton named CAPTUR, with locked ankle joints and legs motion restrained to the sagittal plane is used t ...

We describe here a novel design of a fast high-density robotized fiber positioner system for massive spectroscopic surveys. The fiber positioners are compact, robust, and they can be coordinated, allowing for a high spatial density. Furthermore, the high a ...

This paper reports the design of a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) gripper with four degrees of freedom force sensing capabilities. It will be used to provide force feedback during surgical interventions in which the surgeon will remotely manipulate surgi ...

With the increase of life expectancy, a higher number of elderly need assistance to maintain their mobility and their independance. The hip joint is crucial for walking and is problematic for a large number of aged people. In this paper we present a novel ...

Gravity-feed drilling is the most commonly used method for micro-hole drilling in glass with spark assisted chemical engraving (SACE). This paper proposes a method allowing the systematic characterization of this drilling method. The influences of voltage, ...

This paper presents evaluation of a portable fMRI compatible haptic interface to study the brain correlates of sensorimotor control during wrist motion. The interface is actuated by a shielded DC motor located more than 2 m away from the 3T MR scanner's bo ...

Probe (1) used during a total knee arthroplasty for measuring forces and locations of their points of application and thereby moments comprising A) two load sensitive plates (2 3) apt to be inserted in one joint-compartment of a knee joint each and each be ...

Spark assisted chemical engraving (SACE) is an unconventional micromachining technology based on electrochemical discharge phenomena for glass and various ceramics. The limits of SACE with respect to small dimensions in the particular case of glass are exp ...

Thought insertion (TI) is characterized by the experience that certain thoughts, occurring in one’s mind, are not one’s own, but the thoughts of somebody else and suggestive of a psychotic disorder. We report a robotics-based method able to investigate the ...

Magnetic levitation is an interesting concept in applications where friction and wear-particle contamination should be avoided. In this respect, a former study has shown that diamagnetic levitation, in conjunction with an electrodynamic impulse drive, is a ...

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a novel miniature magnetic climbing robot for industrial inspection. The robot has high mobility with low complexity. ...

Spark assisted chemical engraving (SACE) is a method for 3D microstructuring of glass or other non-conductive materials with high aspect ratio and smooth surface quality. It is applicable for rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices, for MEMS interfacing ...
