The estimation of joint kinematics from skin markers is hindered by the soft tissue artefact (STA), a well-known phenomenon although not fully characterized. While most assessments of the STA have been performed based on the individual skin markers displac ...

In alpine skiing, intermediate times are usually measured with photocells. However, for practical reasons, the number of intermediate cells is limited to three⁻four, making a detailed timing analysis difficult. In this paper, we propose and validate a magn ...

To evaluate whether an activity monitor based on body acceleration measurement can accurately assess the energy cost of the human locomotion, 12 subjects walked a combination of three different speeds (preferred speed+/-1 km/h) and seven slopes (-15 to + 15% by steps of 5%) on a treadmill. Body accelerations were recorded using a triaxial accelerometer attached to the low back. The mean of the integral of the vector magnitude (norm) of the accelerations (mIAN) was calculated. (V) over dot O-2 was measured u

Introduction:Gait and posture in PD patients are generally analyzed in laboratory. However, laboratory techniques do not allow estimating long-term ON/OFF fluctuation in PD patients. Here, we propose an ambulatory system based on kinematic sensors that detects basic body postures and analyzes gait during long-term activity of free moving PD patients. Methods:Thirteen PD patients with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation were monitored up to 5 hours with stimulation ON and OFF. A group of 10 healthy sub

The instrumented Timed "Up and Go" test (iTUG) has the potential for playing an important role in providing clinically useful information regarding an individual's balance and mobility that cannot be derived from the original single-outcome Timed "Up and G ...

Take-off, the most important phase in ski jumping, has been primarily studied in terms of spatio-temporal parameters, with little known about its motor control aspects. This study aims to assess the inter-segment coordination of the shank-thigh and thigh-sacrum pairs using the continuous relative phase (CRP). In total 87 jumps were recorded from 33 athletes with an inertial sensor-based system. The CRP curves indicated that the thighs lead the shanks during the first part of take-off extension and that the

Body accelerations during human walking were recorded by a portable measuring device. A new method for parameterizing body accelerations and finding the pattern of walking is outlined. Two neural networks were designed to recognize each pattern and estimate the speed and incline of walking. Six subjects performed treadmill walking followed by self- paced walking on an outdoor test circuit involving roads of various inclines. The neural networks were first ''trained'' by known patterns of treadmill walking.

The objective of this study is to present a new method of physical activity monitoring, able to detect body postures (sitting, standing and lying) from only one kinematic sensor attached on the chest. Wavelet analysis in conjunction with a simple kinematics model is used to recognize different posture transitions during daily physical activity. The postures observed with this technique matched those obtained with a reference optical motion system. Accurate results were also obtained during real-life testing

Accurate estimation of Energy Expenditure (EE) in ambulatory settings provides greater insight into the underlying relation between different human physical activity and health. This paper describes the development and validation of energy expenditure estimation algorithms. A total of 4 healthy subjects and 3 suffering from multiple sclerosis were monitored using a gold-standard energy expenditure measurement system, a heart rate monitor and accelerometry. We demonstrated that greater improvements can be ac

For analysing performance in alpine ski racing, an accurate estimation of the skier’s centre of mass trajectory and speed is indispensable. However, the sole use of low-cost GNSS might not be accurate enough to detect meaningful differences. The aim of thi ...

Gait analysis methods to estimate spatiotemporal measures, based on two, three or four gyroscopes attached on lower limbs have been discussed in the literature. The most common approach to reduce the number of sensing units is to simplify the underlying bi ...

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality among elderlypersons and are associated with significant adverse psychological andphysical consequences [1].Evaluating fall risk is important because it allows better targeting for preventiveand assistive interventions to at risk subjects. Most falls occur during walkingand several studies have demonstrated an association between changes in gaitand risk of falling in older adults [2]. Despite these findings, fall risk is mainlyassessed by

We propose a new minimal wearable system and a classifier for physical activity recognition. The configuration is solely based on two force sensors placed anteriorly and posteriorly under the feet. To find the optimal sensor configuration, we estimated the ...

A new method for the detection of gait cycle phases using only two miniature accelerometers together with a light, portable digital recorder is proposed. Each subject is asked to walk on a walkway at his/her own preferred speed. Gait analysis was performed using an original method of computing the values of temporal parameters from accelerometer signals. First, to validate the accelerometric method, measurements are taken on a group of healthy subjects. No significant differences are observed between the re

This study aimed to design and validate the measurement of ankle kinetics (force, moment, and power) during consecutive gait cycles and in the field using an ambulatory system. An ambulatory system consisting of plantar pressure insole and inertial sensors ...

A child's natural gait pattern may be affected by the gait laboratory environment. Wearable devices using body-worn sensors have been developed for gait analysis. The purpose of this study was to validate and explore the use of foot-worn inertial sensors f ...

An ambulatory gait analysis method using body-attached gyroscopes to estimate spatio-temporal parameters of gait has been proposed and validated against a reference system for normal and pathologic gait. Later, ten Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) implantation participated in gait measurements using our device. They walked one to three times on a 20-m walkway. Patients did the test twice: once STN-DBS was ON and once 180 min after turning it OFF. A
