Gait speed is a reliable outcome measure across multiple diagnoses, recognized as the 6th vital sign. The focus of the present study was on assessment of gait speed in long-term real-life settings with the aim to: (1) demonstrate feasibility in large cohor ...

Inertial measurement unit (IMU) is a promising tool in the quantification of energy expenditure for human on-land activities, though has never been deployed before to calculate the aquatic activities energy expenditure. Investigating the factors that influ ...

Objective measurement of real-world fall events by using body-worn sensor devices can improve the understanding of falls in older people and enable new technology to prevent, predict, and automatically recognize falls. However, these events are rare and he ...

Objective: Motor changes in major depression (MD) may represent potential markers of treatment response. Physiological rhythms (heart rate/gait cycle/hand movements) have been recently shown to be neither random nor regular but to display a fractal tempora ...

Comprehensive gait analysis usually includes kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography. A complex instrumentation is thus required that only can be installed in a dedicated laboratory. These techniques are valuable to support clinical decisions and to evaluate the results. However, in several instances, a simplified analysis, concentrated on few selected gait parameters, can be valuable as well. One problem, however, is to ascertain that the computed parameters are correct and correspond to what could be m

Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors are widely used for motion analysis in sports and rehabilitation. The attachment of IMU sensors to predefined body segments and sides (left/right) is complex, time-consuming, and error-prone. Methods for solving the ...

For performance analysis in alpine ski racing, an accurate and precise estimation of the centre of mass (CoM) kinematics is indispensable. Currently available systems satisfying this need are video-based stereo-photogrammetry or differential global navigat ...

Activity level and gait parameters during daily life are important indicators for clinicians because they can provide critical insights into modifications of mobility and function over time. Wearable activity monitoring has been gaining momentum in daily l ...

Tripping is considered a major cause of fall in older people. Therefore, foot clearance (i.e., height of the foot above ground during swing phase) could be a key factor to better understand the complex relationship between gait and falls. This paper presen ...

Multiple motor function and strength assessment tools exist for the evaluation of neuromuscular diseases, but most do not directly assess functional ability in the patients' daily physical activity in their home environment. In this study our aim was to assess: 1) the feasibility and accuracy of physical activity monitoring during two days in a home environment of five DMD patients using a non-commercialized monitor containing a 3D accelerometer and a gyroscope, 2) if a difference in the physical activity p

The objective of this study was to objectively assess the physical activity of daily living in chronic pain patients treated with spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Changes in pain and spontaneous physical activity following SCS were evaluated under real life ...

Osteoarthritis is the most frequent joint pathology throughout the world. Obtaining objective, dynamic and quantified data allowing the evaluation of patients’ progress before and after hip arthroplasty is crucial. Gait analysis can be used for evaluating improvement in such patients, since walking is the principal human physical activity. Comprehensive gait analysis usually includes kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography. A complex instrumentation is thus required that only can be installed in a dedica

Inertial measurement units (IMU) are proven as efficient tools for swimming analysis by overcoming the limits of video-based systems application in aquatic environments. However, coaches still believe in the lack of a reliable and easy-to-use analysis syst ...

This study introduces a novel approach for automatic temporal phase detection and inter-arm coordination estimation in front-crawl swimming using inertial measurement units (IMUs). We examined the validity of our method by comparison against a video-based ...

Footwear is supposed to have influence on postural control and is a potential aspect to address in the prevention of falls in the elderly. This study aimed to show whether measurements of static balance and gait are different with habitual shoes compared to new special senior shoes with different heel height and whether these results change after adaptation. In a randomized controlled intervention study, 26 subjects (median age 87 years) were recruited from two nursing homes and one facility of assisted liv

Usually the measurement of multi-segment foot and ankle complex kinematics is done with stationary motion capture devices which are limited to use in a gait laboratory. This study aimed to propose and validate a wearable system to measure the foot and ankl ...

Biomechanics analysis of the ski jump is highly required. Some parameters and their interrelations have been reported in previous research studies limited to few athletes. The generalization of these parameters to athletes of various levels and under train ...

Background: Behavioral change is the key to alter individuals' lifestyle from sedentary to active. The aim was to assess the feasibility of delivering a Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise programme and evaluate the delivery of the intervention by use ...

Although various foot models were proposed for kinematics assessment using skin makers, no objective justification exists for the foot segmentations. This study proposed objective kinematic criteria to define which foot joints are relevant (dominant) in sk ...

This work presents an accurate, robust, wearable measurement system for foot clearance estimation along with algorithms to provide a real-time estimate of foot height and orientation. Different configurations of infrared distance meter sensors were used, b ...
