We have developed hybrid AFM probes with SU-8 polymer body and full platinum and tungsten cantilever and tip. The fabrication process uses surface micromachining of a (100) silicon wafer. The metal (platinum or tungsten) is sputter deposited in oxidation sharpened moulds, giving a final tip sharpness smaller than 20 nm. A SU-8 body is subsequently formed. Spatially resolved photoluminescence spectra of thin GaAs quantum wells are measured by near-field spectroscopy, and two-energy autocorrelation functions of the spectra are derived. When AxGa1-xAs layers are grown on V-grooved GaAs substrates by metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), a Ga rich vertical quantum well (VQW) appears in the V-groove centre. We report evidence of a large blue shift (up to 70 meV) in the photoluminescence spectra of InAs/InP island like quantum wells following the reduction of the InP top barrier layer thickness from 6 nm to near zero. The photoluminescence intensity only starts to decrease when the top barrier thickness falls below 1.5 nm, indicating that radiative recombinations in the islands are very efficient. We present results obtained both with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the cathodoluminescence (CL) mode and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on ZnCdSe/ZnSe electron-beam-pumped laser structures. This investigation aims at establishing a relationship between different parameters measurable in electron microscopy and the lasing activity of the structures.

We show that dielectric objects much smaller than the wavelength used to illuminate them, can produce a confined electric field that perfectly reproduces their shape. This field can be recorded by a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), which explains how these devices reach a resolution far beyond the diffraction limit.
