Vapor-based processes are particularly promising to deposit the perovskite thin film absorber of solar cells. These deposition methods are up-scalable, involve a controlled solvent-free environment, have the ability to conformally coat rough substrates, in ...

Zinc and tin oxides are both earth-abundant materials with demonstrated applicability as electrodes in several optoelectronic devices. The presence of grain boundaries in these polycrystalline films generally limits the electron mobility. By a combinatoria ...

This paper reports on the development of an innovative back-contacted crystalline silicon solar cell with passivating contacts featuring an interband tunnel junction at its electron-collecting contacts. In this novel architecture, named "tunnel-IBC", both ...

Tandem solar cells that feature a high-bandgap perovskite cell on top of a lower bandgap silicon cell have the potential to reach efficiencies > 30%. Here, we present a versatile hybrid deposition method that yields conformal perovskite cells directly on t ...

Tin perovskites are emerging as promising alternatives to their lead-based counterparts for high-performance and flexible perovskite solar cells. However, their rapid crystallization often leads to inadequate film quality and poor device performance. In th ...

Understanding grain morphology and kinetics of solid-phase crystallization is important for controlling the functional properties of polycrystalline materials. Here, in situ coherent X-ray diffraction imaging and transmission electron microscopy elucidate ...

Silicon solar cells are approaching their theoretical efficiency limit of 29%. This limitation can be exceeded with advanced device architectures, where two or more solar cells are stacked to improve the harvesting of solar energy. In this work, we devise ...

Over the last years, the operational stability of perovskite solar cells has been significantly improved by compositional engineering, interface modification, and improved encapsulation techniques. However, irreversible degradation is still ubiquitously ob ...

Recent studies showed that silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells can be prone to potential induced degradation (PID) when encapsulated with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). Here, to gain understanding in the role of EVA, we perform PID test in humid condit ...

Copper electroplating is investigated and compared with common silver printing techniques for the front metallization of silicon heterojunction solar cells. We achieve smaller feature sizes by electroplating, significantly reducing optical shadowing losses ...

Thin two-dimensional (2D) material absorbers have the potential to reduce volume-dependent thermal noise in infrared detectors. However, any reduction in noise must be balanced against lower absorption from the thin layer, which necessitates advanced optic ...

This work investigates halide segregation in methylammonium-free wide bandgap perovskites by photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and advanced electron microscopy techniques. Our study reveals how the formation of nano-emitting low-energy domains embedde ...

A method for rapid quantitative imaging of dopant distribution using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is described. The method is based on SIMS imaging of the cross-section of a reference sample with a known concentration profile. It is demonstrated ...

Dopant-free passivating contacts for photovoltaics have the potential to be deposited at low costs, while providing excellent surface passivation and low contact resistance. However, one pressing issue of dopant-free carrier selective contacts is their low ...

Changes in the nanostructure of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite solar cells are assessed as a function of current-voltage stimulus by biasing thin samples in situ in a transmission electron microscope. Various degradation pathways are iden ...

Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy images are acquired during the reduction of a NiO-YSZ composite in H-2 up to 600 degrees C. Temperature-resolved quantitative information about both chemistry and structure is extracted with nm spatial resol ...
