While chemotherapy is one of the most used treatments in oncology, the systemic administration of chemotherapeutics generally results in undesired damages to healthy tissues and cells, side effects such as severe nausea and leukopenia, and reduced efficacy ...

Vitamin C for longer lifetimes: N-oxide radicals that are widely used for dynamic nuclear polarization can be reduced by scavengers such as sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) during the dissolution process, thus diminishing losses of polarization during the tran ...

The recent progress in the engineering of nanosized inorganic materials presenting tailored physical properties and reactive surface for post-functionalization has opened promising avenues for the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in diagnosis and therapeutic int ...

Porcine hepatocytes transplanted during acute liver failure might support metabolic functions until the diseased liver recovers its function. Here, we isolated high numbers of viable pig hepatocytes and evaluated hepatocyte functionality after encapsulatio ...

Refining the chemical structure of functionalized pyrrolidine-based inhibitors of Golgi α- mannosidase II (GMII) to optimize binding affinity provided a lead molecule that demonstrated nanomolar competitive inhibition of α-mannosidases II and an optimal fi ...

A mild and general method for the selective cleavage of anti-1,3-acetonides has been developed for the differentiation of 1,3-anti and 1,3-syn diols in long chain polyolic fragments. The diluted acidic conditions applied to these systems are compatible wit ...

The exact molecular reaction pathway and crystallization mechanisms of LiNbO3 nanoparticles under solvothermal conditions are derived through extensive time- and temperature-resolved experiments allowing to track all the transient molecular and solid speci ...

Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from BiFeO3 nanocrystals is investigated for the first time to determine their potential as biomarkers for multiphoton imaging. Nanocrystals are produced by an auto-combustion method with 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-propane-1,3 ...

A biophotonics approach based on the nonlinear optical process of second harmonic generation is presented and demonstrated on malignant human cell lines labelled by harmonic nanoparticles. The method enables independent imaging and therapeutic action, sele ...

During the last two decades, marine organisms such as sponges, tunicates, softcoral and starfish proved to be productive sources of structurally complex metabolites presenting unprecedented architectures.[1] These marine natural products often display unex ...

We investigate the use of Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles for tumor tissue labelling in combination with infrared multi-photon excitation at 1250 nm. We report the efficient and simultaneous generation of second and third harmonic by the nanoparticles. ...

Starting from the readily available meso-methylenedi(8-oxa-3-oxobicyclo[3.2.1]hept-6-en-1-yl) (1), meso-1,1'-methylidene [(4R,4'S,6R,6'S)-4,6-dioxycyclohept-1-en-1-yl]tetrasilylethers (7, 8) were obtained and transformed into all-syn 1,3,5,11,13,15-hexahyd ...

A straightforward route is proposed for the multi-gram scale synthesis of heterobifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) oligomers containing combination of triethyloxysilane extremity for surface modification of metal oxides and amino or azido active end ...

The production of hydrogel micropsheres (MS) presenting physical, mechanical, and biological properties which can be modulated by their chemical composition is required to enlarge the panel of biomaterials for cell transplantation therapies. Functionalizat ...

The natural anionic polyelectrolyte alginate and its derivatives are of particular interest for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Most interesting for such applications are alginate hydrogels, which can be processed into various shapes, self-stan ...

Different anchoring groups have been studied with the aim of covalently binding organic linkers to the surface of alumina ceramic foams. The results suggested that a higher degree of functionalisation was achieved with a pyrogallol derivative - as compared ...
