This paper presents a flexible and modular control scheme based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC) to achieve optimal operation of decentralized energy systems in smart grids. The proposed approach is used to coordinate multiple distributed ene ...

Cities are expected to play a key role in achieving the ambitious energy targets set by the European Union. By looking at opportunities beyond the single building scale, urban planners can significantly contribute to shape energy-efficient and low-carbon c ...

Highlights Integration of decentralized models with a centralized national energy system framework. Strategic reduction in photovoltaic (PV) installation requirements and system cost through decentralized approaches. Optimization of self-consumption to min ...

The large share of energy consumption in the residential sector has necessitated better understanding and evaluation of the energy needs in this sector, with the objective of identifying possible pathways for improvement. A series of approaches have been u ...

Surplus electricity production is anticipated to further increase during summer periods due to the inevitable high penetration of renewable energy sources in our energy system. Potential solutions for sustainable and efficient energy storage need to be exp ...

Hydrothermal gasification (HTG) is a promising technology that allows the recovery of nutrients from wet biomass with simultaneous production of an energy-rich gas. In this work, wastewater effluent (leachate) obtained from a composter sanitary system oper ...

The computing platform (OSMOSELua) has been developed in the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group IPESE at EPFL as a flexible and robust tool for the design of complex integrated energy systems. The decision tool has been developed using ...

Thermo-economic modelling techniques are well known techniques to optimise power plant designs. These methods are usually based on the definition of a superstructure that includes the major options of the design. If this approach has proved to be appropria ...

This article integrates solar potential in a given urban area for the competing technologies of Photovoltaic and thermal collectors. On an urban level, scalable from several buildings to whole cities, the authors examine the possibility of solar power inte ...

This paper summarizes the round-table discussion that was held during the European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) in Nice, France, in October 2015 on this topic. The panellists come from different fields of chemical engineering and have thus broug ...

With a growing energy demand in a carbon-constrained society, fuels cells powered by renewable fuels, and specifically solid waste, are seen as interesting contributors to the energy portfolio. The alternative energy industry needs to reduce costs, enhance ...

Based on a previously developed thermo-economic process model, this paper presents a detailed design study for the polygeneration of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), power and heat by catalytic hydrothermal gasification of biomass and biomass wastes in supercr ...

Data are essential to urban building energy models and yet, obtaining sufficient and accurate building data at a large-scale is challenging. Previous studies have highlighted that the data impact on urban case studies has not been sufficiently discussed. T ...

This paper details the development of a systematic methodology using thermo-economic modeling that can be used to identify the optimal exploitation schemes of geothermal resources. A multi-period approach is used, integrating the superstructure of exploita ...

The energy services delivered to urban areas in Switzerland make up more than 45% of the national energy consumption. Thus, in the framework of the Tetraener European project, a methodology has been developed to design low temperature thermal networks base ...

Secondary aluminium production relies on natural gas to transform both primary and recycled aluminium into semi-fabricated products, leading to significant atmospheric emissions, energy losses, and resource consumption. Despite the potential for waste heat ...

Two biomass gasification concepts, i.e. indirectly heated, steam blown fluidised bed gasification and directly heated, air blown fixed bed gasification are modelled with adjusted equilibrium equations, their energy requirements are integrated and an exergy ...

Power-to-gas plants have recently gained more attraction as these storage systems can be deployed in the European energy grid to ease the integration of renewable energy sources. Most studies in this field address several aspects, from their technical perf ...

Lignocellulosic biomass is considered as one of the most promising feedstocks for producing fuel ethanol because of its global availability and environmental benefits of its use. In this paper, the process of lignocellulosic ethanol production was investig ...
