The increased concerns about the effect of human activities on the climate have pushed natural gas among the most obvious solutions for the transition to a low-carbon economy. The growing importance and volumes of liquefied natural gas for transportation o ...

This paper presents a systematic approach for the synthesis of the heat recovery network in total site using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model. This model returns a near-to-optimal network configuration with minimum utility cost while allows to sele ...

Thermochemical biomass-to-fuel conversion requires an increased hydrogen concentration in the syngas derived from gasification, which is currently achieved by water–gas-shift reaction and CO2 removal. State-of-the-art biomass-to-fuels convert less than hal ...

The process design of a 10 to 20MWth Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) production process from wood has been performed. Combining process modeling and process integration techniques, this study proceeds via the following stages: • thermodynamic modeling: mass, e ...

The 5th generation compact district heating and cooling networks in a temperature range of 10 to 16 °C have a great potential for energy savings by providing a heat source for decentralized heating heat pumps, a cold source for air-conditioning and a heat ...

This work proposes a novel approach for the simultaneous synthesis of Heat Exchanger Networks (HEN) and Utility Systems of chemical processes and energy systems. Given a set of hot and cold process streams and a set of available utility systems, the method ...

Simulation-based optimization models are widely applied to find optimal operating conditions of processes. Often, computational challenges arise from model complexity, making the generation of reliable design solutions difficult. We propose an algorithm fo ...

This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of replacing throttling valves with smale-scale, oil-free turbomachinery in industrial steam networks. This is done from the perspective of the turbomachine, which has to be integrated into a n ...

This study presents a comparative analysis of various configurations for sustainable olefins production via chemical recycling of plastic/biomass wastes, integrating CO2 capture, storage and management technologies. The co-gasification, methanol synthesis ...

The AIDRES database aims to support the long-term objective of a fully integrated industrial strategy in the EU 27, providing a service to the European Commission and a catalogue for industries to understand the effectiveness, efficiency and cost of potent ...

This study examines a novel Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) cogeneration system powered by liquefied natural gas integrating realistic and flexible heat management to support efficient maritime applications. With a nominal power capacity of 125 kW, the SOFC-b ...

Despite commonly reported potentials for emission reduction and efficiency increase, industrial heat pumps have yet to reach wide-scale employment in non-refrigeration appli- cations. The bottlenecks are identified as a general scepticism from process oper ...

A method for the analysis of process energy requirements has been used to identify in an early design stage the potential process retrofit measures in an integrated pulp and paper mill. The minimum energy requirements (MER) of the process were computed by ...

The integration of renewable energy sources within the built environment is a compelling challenge to tackle. With the recent climate targets aiming at a carbon neutral energy supply by the mid-century, a modern building energy system (BES) should maximize ...

The conversion of microalgae biomass into biofuels is a quite well explored field of research. Due to high photosynthetic efficiency, microalgae are considered as a potential feedstock for next-generations biofuel conversion processes. This paper addresses ...

An energy production system (100) comprising a fuel cell (102), a combustion unit (103) connected to a flue gas outlet (108) of the fuel cell, the combustion unit configured for combustion of oxidizable components in flue gas output by the fuel cell, the c ...

Occupants' behavior is a major source of uncertainty for the optimal operation of building energy systems. The highly stochastic hot water use behavior of occupants has led to conservative operational strategies for hot water systems, that try to ensure oc ...

In this work, a tool to design district heating networks (DHN) is presented and applied to the city of Lausanne as a case study. The evaluation of the buildings’ heat/cooling demand is performed using a Geographic Information System (GIS) database, built f ...

The transition of the global energy sector from fossil-based towards a zero-carbon system is a necessity to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The ratification of both, the Paris agreement in 2015 and the European Green Deal in 2019, illustrates the p ...

Urea is widely used in agriculture, industry, and food, while it is also a potential fuel. Large-scale urea production relies on fossil fuels, thus there is a strong need for green urea given the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources. A potent ...
