Distric Energy System (DES) represents a promising opportunity to improve energy efficiency and boost the decarbonization of the European energy sector. If most of the studies focus on small consumers typically located within urban areas, large energy user ...

The transition towards more sustainable, fossil-free energy systems is interlinked with a high penetration of stochastic renewables, such as wind and solar. Integrating these new energy resources and technologies will lead to profound structural changes in ...

We develop an energy calculator within an online teaching platform to aid citizens and decision-makers understanding an energy system. The model, designed in order to be easily adapted to any energy system at national or regional scale, is presented and ap ...

This paper addresses a methodology for the optimal conceptual design of thermochemical fuel production processes from biomass. A decomposed modelling approach with separate energy-flow, energy-integration and economic models is presented and coupled to mul ...

The requirement for sustainable development has prompted the researchers to explore solutions for better utilization of renewable energy resources in the future. Biomass is a promising resource and it can be converted to multiple products and services incl ...

In Process Systems Engineering, computationally-demanding models are frequent and plentiful. Handling such complexity in an optimization framework in a fast and reliable way is essential, not only for generating meaningful solutions but also for providing ...

Sugarcane-based ethanol in Colombia has a prospective opportunity to explore the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass taking into account that a large amount of generated residues (between 50 and 100 t/ha) are left on the field after green ha ...

In order to reduce the CO2 emissions in the transportation sector, one can electrify the vehicle, switch to biofuel, or capture and store CO2 on board. In this study, integration of an on board CO2 capture and storage unit with an internal combustion engin ...

CO2 abatement strategies are crucial in any industrial cluster. In post-combustion capture solutions, the highenergy consumption and the cost associated with the operation are the main drawbacks. In this work, a chemical absorption system using a 30% MEA s ...

There is a broad range of techniques available to the engineer and that should be considered in a retrofit project to enhance the energy efficiency of an operating process. The two best known techniques and most often utilized are internal heat recovery by ...

Hydrogen, known for its high energy content and clean combustion, is promising in the energy transition. This study explores the environmental impact of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. 1 kg of hydrogen production at 1 bar serves as the functional un ...

Large scale power production benefits from the high efficiency of gas-steam combined cycles. In the lower power range, fuel cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies exceeding 60%. High temperature Solid ...

A large deployment of energy storage solutions will be required by the stochastic and non-controllable nature of most renewable energy sources when planning for higher penetration of renewable electricity into the energy mix. Various solutions have been su ...

Energy efficiency is crucial for the sustainable operation of industrial and urban sectors. However, practicing engineers seldom have access to open-source tools that can readily evaluate and compare scenarios. In this work, a novel web-based tool called R ...

In this work, a systematic approach combining different energy solutions and the time-varying energy demands is used to identify the operating conditions and arrangements for industrial complexes. A kraft pulp mill integrated to an urban district heating n ...

Electricity markets are currently experiencing a period of rapid change. The intermittent nature of renewable energy is disrupting the conventional methods used in operational planning of the electrical grid, causing a shift from a day-ahead forecast polic ...

A predictive optimal control system for micro-cogeneration in domestic applications has been developed. This system aims at integrating stochastic inhabitant behavior and meteorological conditions as well as modeling imprecisions, while defining operation s ...

This paper presents a methodology aimed at improving the energy efficiency of a brewery applying process integration techniques. The different steps of the analysis are presented. The first step is the identification of the process energy requirements and ...

A large share of the energy is consumed in buildings but at the individual scale, the energy consumption is rarely optimized; as a consequence, energy is wasted, electricity consumption is characterized by peaks and renewable energy integration is hindered ...

Transition from fossils to renewables is leading to radical societal changes. Shifting the capital from fossils to renewables is commonly accompanied with political concerns, such as energy autonomy, domestic employment etc. Despite a decreasing trend in r ...
