In this paper, we propose a unified method for the integrated energy planning during the development of new districts for all involved actors. Taking energy related problems such as equipment choice and size, costs and environmental impact early into consi ...

Among the options for industrial waste heat recovery and reuse which are currently discussed, heat pumping receives far less attention than other technologies (e.g. organic rankine cycles). This, in particular, can be linked to a lack of comprehensive meth ...

The recent geopolitical conflicts in Europe have underscored the vulnerability of the current energy system to the volatility of energy carrier prices. In the prospect of defining robust energy systems ensuring sustainable energy supply in the future, the ...

Policy makers and energy operator have the responsibility to select indicators for their mission to lead the renewable energy transition ensuring energy independence and security of supply in the context of decarbonisation of the energy mix and and/or nucl ...

The use of geothermal resources for the polygeneration of energy services has recently gained interest and is expected to know an important development in the future. Major research questions concern the increase of the efficiency in the usage of geotherma ...

Creating a consistent thermodynamic database is the first step required to perform a process integration study. A method based on the use of data identification and reconciliation has been developed to model the mass and the energy balances of a pulp and p ...

The disposal of sewage sludge poses significant challenges due to storage difficulties and the presence of pollutants and pathogens. Conventional treatment methods, such as incineration and anaerobic digestion (AD), are compared to advanced technologies li ...

The design and operating of energy systems are key issues for matching the energy supply and consumption. Several optimization methods based on the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) have been developed for this purpose. However, due to the uncertaint ...

Electricity markets are currently experiencing a period of rapid change. The intermittent nature of renewable energy is disrupting the conventional methods used in operational planning of the electrical grid, causing a shift from a day-ahead forecast polic ...

This work proposes a sequential approach for the multi-period synthesis of Heat Exchanger Networks (HEN) and Utility Systems of chemical processes and energy systems, including thermal, electric and material storage. The optimization approach is sequential ...

Decarbonization gained prominence with the witnessed rise of temperature over recent years, particularly in the aftermath of the adoption of the Paris agreement for limiting the temperature increase within 2°C until 2050. Biogenic resources are explicitly ...

System (2) for CO2 capture from a combustion engine (1) comprising an exhaust gas flow circuit (6) having an inlet end fluidly connected to an exhaust of the combustion engine, a heat exchanger circuit (12), a primary exhaust gas heat exchanger (H1) for tr ...

Power-to-methane technology has been considered as a promising alternative to cope with seasonal storage of renewable energy and the utilization of CO2 captured from various sources, due to the existing infrastructure for massive methane storage and distri ...

The integration of steam bottoming cycles on oil and gas platforms is currently regarded as the most promising option for improving the performance of these energy-intensive systems. In this paper, a North Sea platform is taken as case study, and a systema ...

The purpose of this paper is to assess techno-economically the integration of solid-oxide electrolysis in biomass-to-methanol processes: (1) The hydrogen produced by electrolysis can be used to adjust the composition of syngas from gasification to increase ...

The present study aims at studying the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of the leftover Brazilian ginseng roots after phytochemicals extraction for synthetic natural gas (SNG) production, envisioning the development of a promising Brazilian ginseng ...

This study focuses on the optimization of green ammonia production systems through a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework. The proposed model integrates both design decisions and detailed annual operational strategies, evaluated at an hourly r ...

The improvement of the efficiency of vehicle energy systems promotes an active search to find innovative solutions during the design process. Engineers can use computer-aided processes to find automatically the best design solutions. This kind of approach ...

In order to facilitate urban energy management and energy planning, the project MEU developed a web based tool as a decision support system for decision makers. Using a web based approach minimizes the effort on the client site as no software needs to be i ...

With perovskite solar cell (PSC) performance already touching the limits of single junction PV devices, the major challenges have now shifted to upscaling and stability. A plethora of materials and processes have been used for making perovskite solar cells ...
