Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) appears ideally suited for high performance separations at small scale, i.e. on a chip. Problems with the reproducible production of the required HPLC column, but also the lack of commercially available CEC instruments have prevented many putative applicants of this promising technique from entering the field. In this paper, a fast and easy way to produce self-containing open-tubular CEC columns (C8-moieties for reversed phase applications) by the sol-gel technique is d

An in-depth understanding of the growth mechanism of nanocrystals (NCs) is of great significance for shape control of colloidal semiconductor nanostructures. In this study, we elucidate the formation mechanism of anisotropic CdSe NCs by systematically inve ...

Reliable in vitro models are required to understand the ability of cells to respond and adapt to mechanical stimuli. To mimic and interface with the microenvironment, lab-on-a-chip devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) provide excellent options ...

A biological and chemical sample processing device that b. comprises a high pressure-resistant, shallow and wide area microfluidic chamber having at least one wall formed by a detachable slide containing samples such as immobilized entities, biological sam ...

We present a new hybrid technology for the realization of three-dimensional millimetre-size inductors for low-power (0.1–1 W) applications. Our devices consist of electroplated planar Cu coils, realized within a high-resolution (5 µm) polyimide flex-foil process, and mm-size ferrite magnetic cores, obtained by three-dimensional micropatterning of ferrite wafers using powder blasting microerosion. Our devices range in volume between 10 and 1.5 mm3 and we characterize their inductive and resistive properties

We show for JET and ASDEX Upgrade, based on Thomson-scattering measurements, a clear correlation of the density limit of the tokamak H-mode high-confinement regime with the approach to the ideal ballooning instability threshold at the periphery of the plas ...

Micro/nanoscopic observations on the surface of the divertor tiles used in the first campaign (2011-2012) of the JET tokamak with ITER-like Wall (JET ILW) have been carried out by means of several material analysis techniques. Previous results from the inn ...

Upon illumination, a dielectric microsphere (mu,S) can generate a photonic nanojet (PNJ), which plays a role in the super-resolution imaging of a sample placed in the mu S's immediate proximity. Recent microscopy implementations pioneered this concept but, ...

We introduce a new low temperature bonding technology to assemble two microstructured glass substrates for the realization of microchannels for miniaturized chemical analysis applications. To realize the microchannels, we introduce, besides the well-known HF-etching technology, two simple alternative methods, namely sawing and micro-powder blasting. After proper cleaning of the two glass surfaces, direct bonding is obtained just by exposing the glass stack to a high pressure (up to 50 MPa) in the 100-200 °C

We propose an approach for magnetic microbead transport in microfluidic channels over long-range distances using an array of simple planar coils. The latter are placed in a uniform static magnetic field, the role of which is to impose a permanent magnetic moment to the microbeads. The very small magnetic field gradient of a simple planar coil is then sufficient to displace the microbeads. The long-range displacement is assured by arranging adjacent coils in the array with spatial overlap in a three-phase ac

A simple optical method is proposed for performing in-plane experimental modal analysis of micromachined structures with a conventional charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. The motion of a micromechanical device actuated by high frequency sinusoidal forces ...
