A Nb3Sn based, React&Wind flat cable, named RW2, was developed in the past three years at the Swiss Plasma Center in the scope of the EUROfusion conceptual studies for DEMO. The test results presented earlier proved an excellent DC performance, but large e ...

A major upgrade of the European DIPOle (EDIPO) test facility, which will allow the testing of superconducting samples both for fusion and for high-energy physics applications, is taking place at the Swiss Plasma Center. With a target background field of 15 ...

Paschen failures in ITER, W7-X and JT60 superconducting coils at the acceptance tests have shown that it is highly desirable to lower the coil discharge voltage (U-d) of the DEMO Toroidal Field (TF) coils. Another benefit of lowering the U-d might be the r ...

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) developed ITER TF Nb3Sn conductors that fulfill ITER requirements and has commenced fabricating the conductors to be used in the ITER TF coils. As a qualification of conductor fabrication, two full-size conductor sampl ...

A special sensor is proposed for magnetization measurement of superconductors with round cross section under pulsed transversal field. The sensor consists of a saddle shaped pick-up coil attached to the cylindrical superconducting sample, with a controlled geometrical distribution of the turns. The pick up coil carries out a two-dimensional flux integration and the software calculates the loop area in Joules. The sensor has been used during a campaign of ITER subsize conductor tests, showing an excellent ag

The attention of the fusion magnet specialists has been drawn in the last years to the volt-ampere characteristic (VAC) of the large cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC), as early voltage was observed in conductor and model coil tests, far away from the expected critical current. In this paper, the studies and models developed in the last decades for the VAC of bulk material and multifilament strands are shortly reviewed. The practical role of the index n of the VAC, both at the industry and in the magnet des

JORDI (JOint Resistance DIstribution), a dedicated test facility for the measurement of contact resistance distribution in full-size, ITER type conductor terminations, has been successfully commissioned at CRPP. In contrast to earlier attempts, where the c ...

The reactive liquid infiltration (RLI) technique, applied to-the MgB2 material, has allowed us to obtain either bulk or wire samples of good transport properties. The evaluation of the voltage-current characteristics, V-I-n, for typical samples, measured by transport at temperatures between 4.2 and 30 K, is presented. The behaviour of the n exponent is discussed in terms of a simple model and the differences between bulk and wire samples are outlined. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An imbalance in the transport current among the strands of a Cable-in-Conduit conductors (CICC) can be associated with the change of their performance. In order to understand and improve the performance of CICC's, it is essential to study the current imbalance. This paper focuses on the study of the current imbalance in two short samples of the SeCRETS (Segregated Cooper Ratio Experiment on Transient Stability) conductors subjected to a cyclic load in the SULTAN facility. The self field around the conductor

An R&D program at CRPP investigates the design of large size Nb3Sn conductors, with the aim to improve the effectiveness and hence the cost of large size, force flow conductors. A design based on a solder filled flat cable, by react wind method, is selecte ...

High temperature superconducting (HTS) materials are widely utilized in various design proposals for fusion magnets, resulting in enhanced performance of the machines compared to the past. However, a reliable quench detection in HTS conductors remains an o ...

The index n of the voltage-current characteristic of large superconductors is a crucial parameter to assess the allowed range for coil operation. In the tests of the Insert coils at the CSMC as well as in the short sample test in the SULTAN facility, it is observed that the index n dramatically decreases from the Nb3Sn strands extracted from cable-in-conduit provide the evidence of a permanent performance drop in the strands, likely due to the transverse load accumulation at the strand crossovers in the cab

Within the R&D program on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Poloidal Field (PF) coils, a full size conductor sample was tested in the SULTAN facility (CRPP Villigen, Switzerland). This sample is composed of two straight ITER-like ...

A new test facility, dedicated to the measurement of contact resistance distribution in full-size conductor termination, has been designed and manufactured at CRPP Fusion Technology in Villigen, Switzerland. The facility will be used to characterize and qualify the ITER joints (both prototype and industrial). The basic components of the new facility are: a medium size, liquid helium cryostat to host the termination sample, a cryogenic, parallel resistor array for providing balanced current injection in up t

The toroidal Field Conductor Insert (TFCI) coil was tested at 46 kA in the 13 T background magnetic field generated by the Central Solenoid Model Coil. The single layer TFCI coil uses a Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductor in a Titanium jacket. The object of this work is to verify the data self-consistency, and to apply a thermal, hydraulic and electrical simulation to derive the strand performance in the cable. We present the results of the analysis in support of the interpretation of a subset of current shari

In Se.C.R.E.T.S. (Segregated Copper Ratio Experiments on Transient Stability), the stability performance under transverse field transient is compared for two Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors which differ only because of the different distribution of the stabilizing copper, either included in the Nb3Sn strand cross section or segregated as bundled copper wires. If the segregated copper is found to be effective for stability purposes, the copper fraction in the Nb3Sn strands can be Substantially reduced, wit

The critical current in multistrands superconducting (SC) cables is usually lower than expected due to current unbalance among strands and early current sharing. It is then crucial to be able to detect the current distribution in SC cables to assess their stability properties. Due to the ill-conditioning of the problem, the reconstruction accuracy may prove very sensitive to the measurement noise and to the uncertainty on the numerical data. In this work, a possible allocation strategy for the magnetic prob

Three decades of conductor R&D, prototypes, model coils and actual fusion devices are reviewed with special attention to the drivers of the design. The conductor options are affected by the requirements typical of the fusion devices (large size and stored ...

Cabled conductors based on Nb3Sn technology with operating current in the range of 20 kA and above are mainly restricted to fusion magnets and high field facilities. The experience of last decade has dramatically shown that, opposite to the NbTi conductors ...

A special cryogenic press has been built to study the mechanical and electrical propel-ties of full-size ITER multistrand Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductor samples under transverse, mechanical loading. This simulates the transverse magnetic force that occurs when the conductors are used in a coil. The cryogenic press can transmit a variable (cyclic) force up to 650 kN/m to a cable section of 400 mm length at 4.2 K. The jacket is opened partly in order to transmit the force directly onto the cable. The variou
