Two full-size conductor samples using advanced Nb3Sn strands were tested in the SULTAN facility in 2005-2006 within (I,B,T) ranges close to the ITER operating conditions (B-MAX similar to 12 T, T similar to 5 K). Each sample includes two conductor legs, co ...

The coupling current loss in rectangular superconducting cables is strictly dependent on their aspect ratio, which has an impact on the area linked by the field variation and consequently on the currents induced between strands. The relation between the ac ...

The design of small solenoids without/with-partial insulation (PI) among turns or layers has been proven to grant higher thermal stability than for standard insulated cases. This technology also implies higher safety standards, by e.g. reducing the coil vo ...

A section of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) conductor, left from the winding of the Central Solenoid Model Coil, was tested for stability under pulsed transverse field in the SULTAN facility, at background field up to 11 T and dc current up to 100 kA. The test was repeated at a broad range of operating temperature and for different current distribution in the strand bundle. The ability to withstand transverse field transients is compared with the predicted energy margin. For lar

The contact resistance distribution among the current-carrying elements of three ITER conductor terminations is measured in the JORDI (JOint Resistance DIstribution) test facility at CRPP. One sample is based on Nb3Sn strands, the other two are NbTi cable- ...

A new series connected 25 T hybrid magnet system is being developed by the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) for neutron scattering experiments. In collaboration with CRPP, high temperature superconducting (HTS) current leads have been developed for the power ...

The main coils of the new European DIPOle (EDIPO) test facility, which is able to provide a background magnetic field up to 12.35 T, were commissioned at the Center for Research in Plasma Physics in July 2013. A field homogeneity of +/-1% was achieved over ...

The magnetic field generated by a coil acts on the cable which results in a transverse force on the strands. This affects the interstrand contact resistances (R-c), the coupling current loss and current redistribution during field changes. A special cryogenic press has been built to study the mechanical and electrical properties of full-size ITER conductor samples under transverse, mechanical loading. The cryogenic press can transmit a variable (cyclic) force up to 650 kN/m to a conductor section of 400 mm

The aim of this work is to determine the existence and degree of the current unbalance of two types of Cable-In-Conduit Conductors (CICC) of the SeCRETS long sample experiment, and its influence on the conductors' performance. The self-field,measurements are performed by using six sets of annular Hall sensors, each containing six sensors, and two linear arrays with ten sensors. The change of the self-field is associated with the redistribution of the transport current between the strands inside the conducto

This paper gives a review of the application of superconductivity to nuclear fusion magnets. For each machine, a short description emphasizes the special features of the winding technology and conductor design. A selection of demonstration magnets is presented, highlighting the relevant achievements. The evolution of the conductor design in recent decades and the open issues for future research and development activities are discussed.

The upgraded magnet assembly of the EDIPO test facility aims at generating 15 T at 4.2 K and 85% of short sample limit in a large rectangular aperture and over a uniform field length of 1000 mm. During 2020 the design studies have concentrated on two flare ...

Two kinds of anomaly, observed in the Volt-Ampere Characteristic (VAC) of large NbTi cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) are discussed. In one case, the wavy behavior of the VAC close to the current sharing range is explained with oscillations of the coolin ...

Seven different high current conductors for fusion applications, made of High Temperature Superconducting stacked tapes, have been successfully tested in the Quench Experiment campaign supported by EUROfusion and carried out in SULTAN. The aim of this exte ...

High-field accelerator magnets of the next generation will require coil grading in order to decrease the amount of superconductor and hence the magnet cost. The joints between Nb3Sn conductor grades must have low electrical resistance (

The commissioning of the European DIPOle (EDIPO) test facility at the Center for Research in Plasma Physics in Villigen was completed in Spring 2015, and the first test of a 60-kA/12-T high-temperature superconductor (HTS) was carried out in June 2015. Use ...

The engineering design of the CFETR TF prototype coil and conductors has been completed. The wind-package (WP) of the coil is graded into three regions based on the magnetic field distribution for saving cost. High-Jc Nb3Sn strand, ITER-like Nb3Sn strand a ...

An improved joint layout layout is proposed for the electrical connections of the large Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors for the Central Solenoid and Toroidal Field coils of ITER, International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The driving design criteria are a reliable electrical performance and an easy manufacturing procedure, limiting the risk of failure and allowing generous assembly tolerances. The development results are reported, as well as the manufacture of a hairpin joint using sections of the

The impact of electromagnetic (EM) and thermal cyclic loading (referred as warm-up-cool-down-WUCD) on the Nb3Sn cable in conduit conductors for the toroidal field magnets of the ITER tokamak should be carefully assessed for the proper operation of the mach ...

The react-and-wind technique for manufacturing of large Nb3Sn fusion magnets (RW) is very attractive because of the superior performance of the Nb3Sn with lower thermal strain compared to the wind-and-react technique. The procedure for magnet winding is al ...

SULTAN, the world wide unique, high field, large bore test facility. has been built as European contribution to the development program for ITER, The facility has primarily been devoted to the qualification of full-size cable-in-conduit-conductors (CICC) foreseen as potential candidates for use in the Central-Solenoid (CS) and the Toroidal-Field (TF) coils of ITER, Fields up to 11 T can be imposed to the vertically inserted CICC-Samples. Horizontal insertion of coiled long conductor samples is possible as d
