An optimized 3D inkjet printing process is demonstrated for structuring alginate into a tissue-like microvasculature capable of supporting physiological flow rates. Optimizing the reaction at the single-droplet level enables wet hydrogel droplets to be stacked, thus overcoming their natural tendancy to spread and coalesce. Live cells can be patterned using this process and it can be extended to a range of other hydrogels.

Since the discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), numerous approaches have been explored to improve the original protocol, which is based on a two-dimensional (2D) cell-culture system. Surprisingly, nothing is known about the effect of a more ...

A combination of two light-induced reactions has been used to attach peptides to a polymeric gel, and then to detach them from it. This feat opens up opportunities for studying the effects of signalling molecules on cell behaviour in vitro.

The invention relates to a method for mixing a first stream of droplets (1) with at least one second stream of droplets (2) to obtain a third stream of fused droplets (3), by collision and fusion of at least one droplet of the first stream (1) with at leas ...

Biomimetic polymer gels have been developed to display the key features of the extracellular matrix, namely presentation of adhesion sites, presentation of growth factor binding sites and release, and ability to be remodeled by cell-assocd. proteases. [on SciFinder (R)]

A microfluidic in vitro cell encapsulation platform to systematically test the effects of microenvironmental parameters on cell fate in 3D is developed. Multiple cell types including fibroblasts, embryonic stem cells, and cancer cells are incorporated in e ...

A review. The ubiquitous use of poly(ethylene glycol) in the biomaterials field has also boosted the research activity in the chem. derivatization of this polymer. We focused our interest on the prepn. of tailor-made poly(ethylene glycol)-based structures and on the study of structure-activity relationships for its functionalization, as preliminary steps for the prepn. of smart functional materials. More specifically, amphiphilic and cationic block copolymers were prepd. for prospective use in the prepn. of

Hydrogels have been used extensively in bioengineering as artificial cell culture supports. Investigation of the interrelationship between cellular response to the hydrogel and its chemistry ideally requires methods that allow characterization without labe ...

The present invention relates to a specific marker for stem cells having long-term multi-lineage blood reconstitution capability and uses thereof for the preparation of cell composition in view of hematopoietic stem cell medicine and in particular regenera ...

A 3D bioprinting approach has been developed to facilitate tissue morphogenesis by directly depositing organoid-forming stem cells in an extracellular matrix, with the ability to generate intestinal epithelia and branched vascular tissue constructs. ...

This protocol describes a versatile microfluidic method to generate tethered protein gradients of virtually any user-defined shape on biomimetic hydrogel substrates. It can be applied to test, in a microenvironment of physiologically relevant stiffness, ho ...

While cell sorting usually relies on cell-surface protein markers, molecular beacons (MBs) offer the potential to sort cells based on the presence of any expressed mRNA and in principle could be extremely useful to sort rare cell populations from primary i ...

A new crosslinking scheme for producing polyethylene glycol hydrogels is described, involving a conjugate addn. reaction between PEG-multiacrylate and PEG-dithiol. Albumin was released from the gels with zero-order kinetics over four days. The gels are amenable to math. description, and the swelling of the gels is modeled by the Flory-Rehner and Peppas-Merrill equations. [on SciFinder (R)]

We report a reliable strategy to perform automated image cytometry of single (non-adherent) stem cells captured in microfluidic traps. The method rapidly segments images of an entire microfluidic chip based on the detection of horizontal edges of microflui ...

Super-resolution techniques expand the abilities of researchers who have the knowledge and resources to either build or purchase a system. This excludes the part of the research community without these capabilities. Here we introduce the openSIM add-on to ...

The invention provides hydrogels and methods for three-dimensional (3D) culture of adult epithelial stem cells and uses thereof. ...

This imagej macro analyses the reporter intensity activity and expression domain in EPI aggregates and Gastruloids. ...

It is said that all models are wrong, but some are useful. In vitro human cell-based models are a prime example of this maxim. We asked researchers: when is your model system useful? How can it be made more useful? What are its limitations? ...

A method for preparing a topographically structured hydrogel microarray is described comprising the steps of a) providing one or more types of biomolecule(s) on top of micropillars of an array of micropillars, preferably by means of robotical spotting, b) ...
