The automatic detection of sleep apnea episodes, without the need of polysomnography and outside a clinical facility, could help facilitate the diagnosis of this disorder. In this work, features to detect sleep apnea events were computed from respiration a ...

Background: The role of dominant frequency (DF) in tracking the efficiency of a stepwise catheter ablation (step-CA) in persistent atrial fibrillation (peAF) remains poorly studied. We hypothesized that the DF time-course during step-CA displays divergent ...

One of the fundamental challenges in EEG signal processing is the selection of a proper method to correct ocular artifacts in the recorded electroencephalogram (EEG). Several methods have been proposed for this task. Among these methods, two main categorie ...

Wearable devices based on photoplethysmography (PPG) allow for the screening of large populations at risk of cardiovascular disease. While PPG has shown the ability to discriminate atrial fibrillation (AF)-the most common cardiac arrhythmia (CA)-versus nor ...

Purpose: Experimental studies showed that local capture of atrial fibrillation (AF) by rapid pacing was possible in humans. However, contradictory observations were reported on its effect at distant atrial sites. The present model-based study investigated ...

This article raises various issues in the design of an efficient BCI system in multimedia applications. The main focus is on one specific modality, namely an electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI. In doing so, we provide an overview of the most recent progress achieved in this field, with an emphasis on signal processing aspects.

Fixed structure Mathematical Morphology (MM) operators have been used to detect QRS complexes in the ECG. These schemes are limited by the arbitrary setting of threshold values. Our study aims at extracting QRS complex fiducial points using MM with an adap ...

Stepwise radiofrequency catheter ablation (step-CA) has become the treatment of choice for the restoration of sinus rhythm (SR) in patients with long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (pers-AF). Its success rate appears limited as the amount of ablat ...

We propose a new method for ventricular cancellation and atrial modelling in the ECG of patients suffering from atrial fibrillation. Our method is based on dictionary learning. It extends both the average beat subtraction and the sparse source separation a ...

Spatial filtering is a widely used dimension reduction method in electroencephalogram based brain-computer interface systems. In this paper a new algorithm is proposed, which learns spatial filters from a training dataset. In contrast to existing approaches the proposed method yields spatial filters that are explicitly designed for the classification of event-related potentials, such as the P300 or movement-related potentials. The algorithm is tested, in combination with support vector machines, on several

The autonomic balance is often measured using the low frequency~(LF) and high frequency~(HF) powers of the heart beat-to-beat intervals. However, these indices do not adequately integrate the influence of respiration and have been widely criticized. We studied the autonomic balance with measures from the heart beat-to-beat intervals taking into account the respiratory activity. Using cardiac and respiratory data acquired simultaneously from healthy volunteers in supine and orthostatic positions, we found th

It was recently shown that atrial fibrillation (AF) waves on chest lead V1 adequately reflect right atrial appendage (RAA) activity during long standing persistent AF (pers-AF). The contribution of the left atrial (LA) activity to chest leads AF waves, how ...

We propose a biophysical modelling approach to separately investigate the impact of right and left atrial (RA/LA) electrical heterogeneity on atrial fibrillation (AF) perpetuation. The baseline AF substrate was based on a 4:1 anisotropy ratio and uniform membrane properties. AF was initiated by a ramp-pacing protocol applied in the pulmonary veins region. Once AF was observed, random patchy heterogeneities in action potential duration (shorter duration inside the patches) were introduced in the cellular mod

The aim of this work is to present different markers resulting from the analysis of a single ECG lead recorded during sinus rhythm. To this purpose, the ECGs from three populations were compared: healthy subjects, patients subject to paroxysmal AF selected ...

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system that translates brain-activity into commands for a computer or other devices. In other words, a BCI allows users to act on their environment by using only brain-activity, without using peripheral n ...

Autonomous decision making modules in computer vision application allow recognition and classification of different objects, persons, and events in images and video sequences and also make it possible to classify different sensor readings (e.g. images) acc ...

Olfaction-enhanced multimedia experience is becoming vital for strengthening the sensation of reality and the quality of user experience. One approach to investigate olfactory perception is to analyze the alterations in brain activity during stimulation with different odors. In this article, the changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) when perceiving hedonically-different odors are studied. Results of within and across-subject analysis are presented. We show that EEG-based odor classification using brain

One of the rhythm control strategies in atrial fibrillation management consists in the application of a brief single electrical shock to the atria. This electrical cardioversion does not always succeed, and the long-term success of this therapy is not suff ...

Computer model-based simulations have shown that rapid stimulation at 60-100% of atrial fibrillation cycle length (AFCL) from a ring of electrodes located around the septum may induce local capture in both atria for most AF dynamics. The present study aims ...

Atrial rate is known to modulate ventricular response during atrial fibrillation (AF). The resulting pulse irregularity translates into widely varying inter-beat intervals (IBIs) extracted from recorded surface electrocardiogram (ECG) activity. In AF, the ...
