In an attempt to go beyond the conventional laboratory experiments widely reported in literature around the emerging technique of soil bio-cementation, this work addresses key challenges related to its large-scale application. Precisely, a state-of-the-art ...

CO2 storage in deep aquifers, which is considered one of the most viable technologies, is delivering on its promise of limiting the greenhouse effect. Nevertheless, deep aquifers may experience significant deformation and geomechanical instabilities, such ...

Energy geostructures are foundations equipped with absorber pipes, exchanging heat with the surrounding ground. They provide a good heat source for the heating and cooling of buildings but the temperature variations they undergo bring new challenges. Therm ...

The in-situ thermal response test provides an effective method to determine the ground thermal properties required for the design of a geothermal energy installation. This paper presents a unique compact testing device for in-situ thermal response testing ...

Research and practice in the broader fields of civil and geotechnical engineering had long ignored the presence of living microorganisms in the subsurface and the way it impacts conventional practices. In the last 10 years, the term “microbial induced calc ...

The response of the soil-structure interface can significantly affect the performance of any geotechnical structure. Thermal cycles are a new factor that influence the response to all structures that have an energy function in addition to the structural on ...

The volumetric response of compacted bentonites against environmental actions is a key aspect in most designs of nuclear waste repositories. The safety assessment of such repositories must account for robust and reliable models of stress–strain for bentoni ...

This paper presents experimental analysis and numerical modelling aimed at improved understanding and prediction of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of volcanic ash at various states of saturation. Results from a comprehensive experimental program are presen ...

The development of engineering activities involving shales such as the extraction of shale gas and shale oil, the nuclear waste geological storage and the sequestration of CO2, has led to an increasing interest toward the geomechanical behaviour of this ge ...

A promising alternative technique for ground improvement is microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), harnessing microbial processes to induce calcium carbonate precipitation. While extensive research has focused on modelling the multiphysical processes of MICP, field-scale benchmarking remains limited. This study employs a 2D axisymmetric multiphysical modelling framework to simulate an upscaling experiment with varied injection strategies using a gravity flow approach in an unsaturated soil doma

In the context of nuclear waste geological storage, deep argillaceous formations are likely to be subjected to complex mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal loads. In particular, the argillaceous material can be firstly dried, and then re-wetted. During the latter process, the material experiences swelling and can develop swelling pressure if swelling deformations are constrained. In this contribution, the results of swelling pressure tests on shale performed in totally constrained conditions (isochoric tests)

In order to characterize the water retention behavior of fine soils, very high suction values have to be applied. In this range of values, the vapor equilibrium technique is usually used. This paper presents an innovative device, a sorption bench, which pe ...

Significant advancements in the experimental analysis of soils and shales have been achieved during the last few decades. Outstanding progress in the field has led to the theoretical development of geomechanical theories and important engineering applications. This book provides the reader with an overview of recent advances in a variety of advanced experimental techniques and results for the analysis of the behaviour of geomaterials under multiphysical testing conditions. Modern trends in experimental geom

Of the various types of road structures, bridges are the most exposed to icing; the problem of icing is widely addressed through salting, which reduces the lifespan of the bridge. One promising solution to avoid the use of salt is the seasonal storage of s ...

Gas shales are fine-grained, organic-rich sedimentary geomaterials with ultra-low permeability requiring hydraulic stimulation for gas extraction. Characterizing their water retention behavior is critical for predicting hydromechanical behavior and fluid f ...

The analysis of the volumetric behavior and the consolidation of shales require the involved materials to be tested under high confining stresses. The paper presents the apparatuses and the techniques that have been developed recently for testing shales under high-stress conditions. An advanced oedometric cell is introduced to analyse the transition from the over- to the normally consolidated state of shales; the apparatus allows investigating the volume change behavior of shales at high vertical stress (up

Repositories in deep clay geological formations are considered one of the most promising solutions for a sustainable management of High Level radioactive Waste (HLW). The Swiss HLW disposal concept consists in horizontal tunnels excavated at high depth in strongly over consolidated clay (Opalinus Clay) where Granular Bentonite is chosen for enclosing steel canisters containing the waste. This paper presents the theoretical approach and the research activities aiming at investigating the behaviour of this ma

A coupled water retention-mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated aggregated soils is presented here. Based on the multi-scale experimental results, the model incorporates the inter-particle bonding, fabric and partial saturation effects in a single ...

The mechanical properties of Opalinus Clay shale are strongly affected by the mineralogical composition of the layers and by their spatial arrangement at centimetre to decimetre scales. For this reason, accurate laboratory characterization of the mechanica ...

Mechanisms of shrinkage and the conditions leading to cracking of drying soils are addressed. An elastic formulation of the hydro-mechanical drying problem is presented. It relies on the analogy which can be drawn between the desiccation process and thermo ...
