Analysis of macroscopic desiccation shrinkage experiments indicates that most, but not all of the shrinkage during drying occurs while soil is still saturated. Shrinkage practically ceases and air starts to penetrate the soil, when the water content is sti ...

Caprock formations are intended to prevent upwards carbon dioxide (CO2) migration to the surface during CO2 geological storage. Caprock interaction with CO2, as well as its potential consequences, requires to be predicted, and thus, need to be studied expe ...

Little is known about the real energy potential of thermoactive underground infrastructures, such as railway stations, that can act as a heating/cooling provider for the built environment. This study presents the results of thermomechanical full-scale in s ...

Limit-state analysis of soil-structure interacting systems is a classical problem in theoretical and applied soil mechanics. Usually, the capacities of both components are evaluated separately. However, it is well known that soil-structure interaction play ...

Deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system constitutes one of the most promising options for isolating high-level radioactive waste from the human environment. In order to certify the efficiency of waste isolation it is essential to unders ...

Energy piles are subjected to short- and long-term cyclic thermal loads due to their unique role as heat exchangers. Their response to monotonic temperature change has been investigated by various researchers from both experimental and numerical points of ...

The geothermal use of concrete geostructures (piles, walls and slabs) is an environmentally friendly way of cooling and heating buildings. With such geothermal structures, it is possible to transfer energy from the ground to fluid-filled pipes cast in conc ...

Sand/bentonite (S/B) mixtures are considered as backfilling materials for nuclear waste storage. The paper presents an experimental campaign that was carried out to investigate the swelling behavior of a S/B mixture, under different hydro-chemo-mechanical ...

This paper presents an overview of new technologies and applications on thermoactive geostructures. A discussion session on issues involved with near surface geothermal systems is presented, focusing on opportunities for developing new technologies to addr ...

The contributions assembled in the present volume proceed from the lectures of the 2009 ALERT Geomaterials School devoted to the Failure in the multiphase geomaterials. The multiphase behaviour of geomaterials used to be mainly considered from the point of ...

Soils, as well as most of deformable multiphase porous materials, are likely to suffer from desiccation cracking, leading to the formation of regular crack patterns affecting their permeability. The ensuing cracks spacing has often been related to a concep ...

The FEBEX test was a large-scale demonstration project for the deep geological disposal concept of nuclear waste involving bentonite seals that lasted 18 years. One of the objectives of the test was to evaluate the capabilities of numerical methods to prov ...

Damage induced by desiccation (i.e. drying and cracking) is a ubiquitous issue in waste storage engineering. The fundamental mechanisms of the phenomenon of cracking during drying and the ways to control or avoid it are still elusive. This paper presents t ...

Biogeotechnical research has inspired revolutionary ideas to claim the status of a distinctive branch of geotechnical engineering. Most notably, underground carbonate mineralization, most commonly referred to as microbially induced carbonate precipitation ...

The definition of a consistent stress framework is an essential prerequisite to the constitutive modelling of unsaturated soils. It is proposed to clarify the effective stress lexicon commonly used for unsaturated soils, one of the purposes being to contri ...

Soil biocementation represents an emerging technique that has dominated the development of sustainable and innovative geotechnics during the past decade. Despite numerous studies focusing on peak strength behavior and the ensuing softening response, less i ...

This study presents an equivalent pier analysis of the vertical deformation and displacement of full-scale pile groups subjected to mechanical and thermal loads that are associated with a structural support and a geothermal heat exchanger operation, respec ...

Though obliquely incident plane wave across rock fractures has been extensively investigated by theoretical analysis, the quantitative identification of each wave emerged from fractures has not been achieved either in numerical simulation or laboratory exp ...

This study focuses on a specific problem related to the caprock deformation induced by the injection of CO2 at depth. The adopted methodology includes the development of a mathematical model that incorporates the deformable behaviour of storage media and t ...

In the light of growing concerns for the climate change, it is of particular interest for governments to encourage efficient capture and safe storage of large amounts of carbon dioxide in the subsurface. In this perspective and in order to accurately predi ...
