This paper is the basis for a course dedicated to the geomechanics modelling, taking into account multiphysics couplings. A number of different coupling are discussed, with respectively the fluid flow (saturated and unsaturated) and the thermal transfers i ...

Understanding the mechanical behaviour of compacted bentonite upon re-saturation is of outmost importance in most designs of nuclear waste disposal repositories. The behaviour of bentonite is characterized by its stress-path dependency and it is typically ...

Mechanisms of shrinkage and the conditions leading to cracking of drying soils are addressed. An elastic formulation of the hydro-mechanical drying problem is presented. It relies on the analogy which can be drawn between the desiccation process and thermo ...

Disposal of radioactive waste in deep geological repositories relies on the integrity of geological barriers, where gas migration can compromise long-term safety. This study examines the hydro-mechanical response of a shale under varying gas pressure build ...

A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted in the present work towards investigating bio-cemented geo-materials which extends from sample preparation, to microstructural inspection and mechanical behaviour characterization. We suggest a new way to induce “ce ...

MX-80 granular bentonite is expected to be used as a buffer material for high level nuclear waste storage in Switzerland. This material is composed of 85% of smectite clay and exhibits a particular structure with four different scales. MX-80 macroscopic pr ...

Advanced geotechnical engineering applications, such as shale gas extraction, CO2 geological sequestration, and geological radioactive waste storage, often involve various types of shales located at significant depths. Shales exhibit mechanical properties ...

The state-of-the-art report presented herein is aimed at documenting, to the largest extent possible, some of the recent advances in laboratory testing of unsaturated soils for stress-strain-strength-stiffness characterization under suction-controlled isot ...

This study addresses the geothermal potential of using the anchors of a cut-and-cover tunnel as heat exchangers with the ground for seasonal heat storage. The influence of the soil properties and water table level were investigated. Various service conditi ...

A coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is presented for the analysis of landslide motion during crisis episodes. The mathematical formulation is used to model a natural slope affected by a multiple slip surface failure mechanism, in which pore water pressu ...

Energy geostructures represent a renewable and clean source of energy which can be used for heating and cooling of buildings and de-icing of infrastructures. This technology couples the structural role of geostructures with the energy supply, using the pri ...

Assessing the performance of deep geological repositories for heat-generating radioactive waste requires reliable predictions of the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of the clay barriers (the buffer material as well as the host rock/clay). This repr ...

The constitutive modeling of shales is an important topic in the geomechanics community as it is often encountered in advanced applications such as nuclear waste storage, CO2 sequestration, and unconventional oil and gas exploitation. The goal of this work ...

This study presents a method for estimating the average vertical displacement of energy pile groups subjected to thermal loads. The method consists of replacing any regular energy pile group with a single equivalent pier of the same length and an equivalen ...

This study examines the influence of the internal air environment on the geothermal potential of a metro station in Bucharest with a standard design commonly found in metro stations. It addresses the challenges posed by factors such as train movement on ai ...

In a few years, safe and definitive solutions should be ready to manage large quantities of high-level radioactive waste. Deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system constitutes one of the most promising options to isolate such waste from the human environment. In order to provide reasonable assurance of the waste isolation efficiency, it is essential to understand the behaviour of the confining geomaterials under a variety of environmental conditions, such as variations in temperature and h

Numerical analysis was performed based on the Material Point Method (MPM) to analyze the failure mechanisms of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration. A coupled hydro-mechanical finite element model was applied to solve the rainfall infiltration and slope instability, allowing the analysis to capture both the failure and post-failure mechanisms. Rainfall infiltrated into the surface of the slope and, when it encounters low permeability layers or impermeable layers, excess pore water pressure is for

Cracking is a most unwanted development in soil structures undergoing periodic drying and wetting. Desiccation cracks arise in an apparent absence of external forces. Hence, either an internal, self-equilibrated stress pattern resulting from kinematic inco ...

In deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system, the engineered materials, generally made of bentonite, constitute an important mechanical, thermal and hydraulic barrier to prevent the interaction between wastes and biosphere. To better unde ...

Experimental findings on the hysteretic nature of the soil water retention curve, relating the degree of saturation to the matric suction, have generally to be superimposed with the aspects due to the deformability of the soil matrix. Indeed, most state-of ...
