The urban subsurface represents a critical underutilized resource for addressing the rising energy and infrastructure demands of modern cities. Among the emerging technologies that use this potential, energy geostructures offer an innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective solution. By integrating geotechnical engineering principles with energy functionality, these systems provide both structural stability and renewable heating and cooling energy for buildings and infrastructure. Over the past three decade

Using pile foundations as heat exchangers with the ground provides an efficient and reliable energy source for the heating and cooling of buildings. However, thermal expansion or contraction of the concrete brings new challenges to the design of such struc ...

The trend in modern unsaturated soil mechanics is to enhance the physical understanding of the soil water retention properties. It is agreed that the retention characteristics depend on the state of compaction and are related to the deformability of the me ...

Heating and cooling of the buildings represent an important area of energy consumption in the developed countries. Furthermore, a large part of this demand is still satisfied with fossil resources such as oil or gas. Therefore, developing alternative and renewable heat sources for buildings is a major challenge for future energy policies. But because of the congestion of the urban underground, conventional ground source heat pump systems need new heat exchangers with the ground. Therefore, embedding absorbe

Triaxial testing of argillaceous rocks and shales is significantly more challenging than conventional rock mechanical testing. The challenges are mainly related to the very low permeability of these geomaterials, and their sensitivity to exposure of atmosp ...

This paper presents a geomechanical model that was developed to investigate the behaviour of a natural slope located on the bank of the Rhine between the towns of Stein and Mumpf in Switzerland. The slope, affected by a large landslide, constitutes a relev ...

Traffic loads combined with moisture variations are the most harmful for road structures. Even if the pavement is assumed to have an elastic behaviour, the partially saturated subsoil can present irreversible strains that endanger the integrity of the road ...

The behaviour of a pile subjected to thermo-mechanical loads was studied in situ with the aim of quantifying the thermal influence on the bearing capacity of heat exchanger piles. To accomplish this, a pile situated in a building under construction was equ ...

Over the last fifty years, the interaction factor method has been widely used to address the vertical displacement and the increased deformation of conventional pile groups subjected to mechanical loads when group effects and interactions occur among the p ...

There is currently a lack of established calculation method for the geotechnical design of heat exchanger piles, although the technology is experiencing a fast expansion. Instead of quantifying the effects of temperature changes on the static behavior of h ...

The present invention relates to a method for inducing ground consolidation. The method comprises providing a first chamber (7) in a first hole (3) in the ground (5), and a second chamber (7) in a second hole (3) in the ground (5), the first and second cha ...

Heavy rainfall can lead to shallow slips on slopes which are often initially in a state of partial water saturation. A multiphysics approach and advanced constitutive modeling are necessary to take into account the physical key processes in partially satur ...

Energy piles, due to their unique roles of coupling the structural support and heat exchange with the surrounding ground, are subject to temperature cycles during their lifetime. Although their behaviour during individual temperature increase or decrease h ...

This study analyses the response of compacted bentonites upon hydration based on a coupled hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic framework. As an alternative to multi-porosity interpretation, the framework was selected based on the experimental evidence of adsor ...

Failure conditions in soils at elevated temperatures appear to be strongly dependent on the history of the application of stress and temperature. Four cases of such history leading to various modes of failure are identified and interpreted in terms of Ther ...

Bridges are one of the road structures that are most exposed to icing, a problem that is widely dealt with through salting, a technique that reduce the lifespan of the bridge. Seasonal storage of solar heat energy captured directly through the asphalt laye ...

Geotechnical engineering projects are often at risk from threats related to mineral dissolution and loss of particles that constitute the matrix of the geomaterial. Moreover, the impact of climate change can exacerbate these risks by accelerating the physi ...

This study presents a fundamental investigation of the convection heat transfer phenomenon driven by airflows in underground tunnels, with reference to the development of the so-called thermal and velocity boundary layers. The purpose of the work is to exp ...

Drying shrinkage is modeled at a microscale as a two-stage process of deformation and evacuation of a two-tube vessel system, based on porosimetry evolution. In the first stage water flow is driven by an external evaporation flux. Flow is associated with a ...

This paper presents an innovative method called Micro-cell technique to obtain the water retention curves of geomaterials particularly highly swelling clays such as MX-80 bentonite. This method is based on the controlled water content and measured suction using a dew-point potentiometer system. The method allows obtaining the water retention of swelling material with high precision and reproducibility using the same specimen for the whole wetting and drying cycles. The influence of void ratio, temperature,
