This study is concerned with the problem of energy piles subjected to constant axial load and temperature variation uniform over the cross-section. In the first part of this article, equations for the analysis of energy piles based on elastic theory and th ...

The response of soil subjected to thermal cyclic loading plays an important role in certain engineering applications, such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, heat storage systems, CO2 sequestration plant and energy geostructures. For instance, energy ge ...

This paper presents an innovative double cell triaxial system developed for better understanding of the complex thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of soils. In addition to the conventional triaxial mechanical testing, the equipment is aimed to perform suction controlled tests under wide range of temperature and confining pressure. Suction controlled tests are implemented by the axis translation as well as vapor techniques to control the matric and total suction. The device is provided with two advanced featu

The main purpose behind the use of energy piles is to enable the exploitation of geothermal energy for meeting the heating/cooling demands of buildings in an efficient and environment-friendly manner. However, the long-term performance of energy piles in d ...

A deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system constitutes one of the most promising options to isolate high-level radioactive waste from the human environment. In order to certify the efficiency of waste isolation, it is essential to understand the behavior of the confining geomaterials under a variety of environmental conditions. The efficiency of an Engineered Barrier System (EBS) is largely based on a combination of bentonite and host rock characteristics. To contribute to a better unders

This study focuses on a specific problem related to the caprock deformation induced by the in-jection of CO2 at depth. The adopted methodology includes the development of a mathematical model that incorporates the deformable behaviour of storage media and the flow of two immiscible fluids (CO2 and wa-ter) within the aquifers while the surface rock or caprock layer is modelled as a thin plate. Governing equa-tions are solved for the axisymmetric flexural deflection due to a constant rate of injection of CO2.

Energy piles represent an innovative technology that can help provide sustainable geothermal heating or cooling energy for thermal conditioning purposes. In hot-dominated climates, the interest is to inject heat in the ground and extract energy for space-c ...

Opalinus Clay shale, the selected host geomaterial of a high-level radioactive waste repository in Switzerland, was sourced at shallow depth in a borehole in the northern part of the country. Pairs of specimens, retrieved from the same depth were prepared ...

The effect of the temperature dependence of the internal friction angle is studied in a boundary value problem simulating the impact of a cylindrical heat source on the soil mass in which it is embedded. This follows a previous study which shows that such ...

This study focuses on the analysis of the energy performance and economic feasibility of so-called tunnel energy segmental linings: an innovative technology that couples the structural support role of the tunnel lining with the heating-cooling role of the ...

The heating and cooling of buildings worldwide represent a large amount of the energy needs and are one of the significant sources of CO2. Decreasing the environmental impact of residential and office buildings is of crucial interest. Energy geostructures ...

Borehole heat exchanger applications are growing every day - so pronouncedly that many borehole fields will likely operate in dense installation areas in the foreseeable future. In these conditions, thermal interactions will have the potential to develop b ...

Deep disposal of high-level radioactive waste is the preferred solution worldwide for the long-term disposal of nuclear waste. This concept involves a series of geological and engineered barriers that provide isolation of the waste from the biosphere. Most ...

Energy piles are rapidly gaining acceptance around the world because they represent a renewable and clean source of energy that can be used for the heating and cooling of buildings, and the de-icing of infrastructures. This technology couples the structura ...

A new unified constitutive hydro-mechanical model named ACMEG-s is formulated to improve modelling of unsaturated soils in free or constrained conditions. Indeed, due to particular mechanical and hydraulic boundary conditions, some natural and engineered f ...

The behaviour of conventional pile groups (e.g., closely spaced) that are subjected to mechanical loads has been shown to be different than the behaviour of single isolated piles. The so-called group effects are responsible for this behaviour and must be c ...

Strain rate and temperature have important effects on the behaviour of soils. The present paper enhances the thermo-viscoplastic modelling of soils by taking advantage of the most recent understanding of the effects of temperature and strain rate on soils. ...

Geothermal operation of energy piles involves an interplay between the multi-physical phenomena governing the behaviours of soils, geostructures and the interactions between them, which are mainly characterized by the associated temperature variations. Thi ...

Analysis and Design of Energy Geostructures gathers in a unified framework the theoretical and experimental competence available on energy geostructures: innovative multifunctional earth-contact structures that can provide renewable energy supply and structural support to any built environment. The book covers the broad, interdisciplinary and integrated knowledge required to address the analysis and design of energy geostructures from energy, geotechnical and structural perspectives. This knowledge includes

Theoretical methods for estimating the bearing capacity of surface strip footings usually do not consider soil-structure interaction. A few publications deal with the subject, but all of these either do not apply rigorous methods or do not consider the gen ...
