The changing relationships between cities and their waters over the centuries lead today – after a clear sidelining of rivers in the city – to question their potential for building new interactions. Current densification objectives of the existing built fa ...

In the context of temporary events, the use of structural systems suitable for short-term use, is a key strategy in terms of organization. However, this type of infrastructure currently requires the implementation of significant resources, for which the characteristics of flexibility and economic efficiency most often prevail over considerations related to sustainability. This lack of sustainability exists due to several attributes of a temporary building. Firstly, the distance between the place of storage

The present logic of built environment dispersion appears incompatible with the concept of sustainable development. The peripheral expansion of cities is indeed leading to irrational use of ground, growing environmental impact and important infrastructure ...

The built environment is facing environmental regulations more ambitious than ever before. In Europe, a law will lead all new buildings to the Nearly Zero-Energy performance level. However, even if a building does not have any energy consumption for its op ...

Switzerland has adopted the concept of the 2000 Watts society as a long term target, with an intermediate objective for 2050: a reduction of the average energy consumption per person from 6300 to 3500 watts, including a maximum of 2000 watts of non-renewable energy. Following this concept, the SIA (Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects) has developed energy consumption targets for the built environment: embedded energy of materials, operating energy (heating, domestic hot water, electricity, air conditi

The regeneration of urban brownfields is a relevant strategy to limit the sprawling of post-industrial European cities. However, the integration of sustainability issues in urban brownfield regeneration projects is not a spontaneous process, remaining in m ...

Current planning policies aim at putting a stop to urban sprawl by favouring densification processes. In this context, future developments are more likely to happen in strategic urban areas than in existing peri-urban neighbourhoods of single-family houses ...

The objective of this research work is to compare the environmental impact, expressed in terms of non-renewable cumulative energy demand (CEDnr) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, of nine architectural visions for a new neighbourhood located in the periur ...

Tomorrow's cities are already largely built, as much of the existing building stock – with a low level of energy performance – will still be standing in 2050. Urban renewal processes therefore play an essential role towards the sustainable transition of Eu ...

Regeneration of disused urban areas, such as industrial brownfields or abandoned infrastructural zones, has received considerable attention in the context of post‐industrial European cities. Due to the inherent complexity of these projects, a holistic integration of sustainability objectives is far from being an automatic process. It depends upon a proactive search for global quality, integrated in a participative way in the project dynamics and a structured and continuous assessment of environmental, econo

Today, in many European countries, increasing opposition tends to thwart urban densification projects. To enhance public acceptability of such projects, which are likely to promote sustainable urban development, it is essential to better anticipate urban p ...

In the context of sustainable densification of post-industrial European cities, urban wasteland regeneration projects offer an important potential of surfaces to recapture. Indeed, these projects can contribute concurrently to densify and revitalize existi ...

Environmental performance assessment of the built environment tends to focus mostly on operational final energy consumption of buildings located within a specific context. Such a limited scope prevents broader usability of findings in practice. In Switzerl ...

Although a building lifetime is not predictable, it is an essential data in the yearly impact calculation. Yet, in the assessment of the environmental impacts of building the lifetime is considered as a fixed value. The purpose of this study is to introduc ...

The post-industrial European city is characterized by dispersed urbanization, resulting in increased travel, substantial use of land, social disparities and costs that are unsustainable in the long term. Consequently, most European countries have set the goal of limiting urban sprawl by prioritizing increased density in already built-up areas. To achieve this goal, it is not enough to build new buildings in the urban lots that are still available. Efforts to increase the density of existing neighborhoods ar

The project Symbiotic Districts aims to develop a new design and calculation methodology for creating symbiotic districts in the Swiss urban context. The research examines the scientific, technical, urban development and architectural dimensions that influ ...

The need for sustainable architecture and urban design and planning has long been acknowledged, along with the necessity for adequate, early-phase guiding instruments. This paper aims at exploring the effectiveness and usability of a novel decision-support ...

It is now common knowledge, the regeneration of previously developed sites in urban areas can have positive impacts on the environment, the economy and the society as they constitute opportunities for the densification of the existing built fabric. In the ...

The Microcity building, which houses the new branch of the EPFL in Neuchâtel (Switzerland), is the result of a synergy-generating strategy based on partnerships, experimentation with innovative processes and the continuous integration of sustainability-rel ...
