Sustainable urban densification is one of the main challenges of European post-industrial cities. In Switzerland, a recent adaptation of the federal law on spatial planning reinforces the limitation of urban sprawl. Hence, public authorities are confronted ...

In the context of sustainable development of European post-industrial cities, urban wastelands offer an important potential of surfaces to recapture. The regeneration of these sites is indeed an opportunity to simultaneously create density within the exist ...

One of the relevant strategies to limit the sprawl of post-industrial European cities is the regeneration of urban brownfields. This type of projects concentrates new development within already urbanized areas and contributes to their revitalization. Despi ...

Within the frame of temporary events, having recourse to the model of the tent corresponds to usual experiences. When the model offers advantages of fast assembly and certain flexibility, it has some significant disadvantages at the same time, especially r ...

In a context marked by the urgency of climate change, dwindling resources, and environmental crisis, concrete action towards ecological transition and climate adaptation is a top priority for urban areas. In response to these multiple challenges, the research project "Maillages fertiles" seizes the opportunity of the reopening and renaturation of two urban rivers in Geneva, Switzerland, to explore the potential of innovative green open spaces as a climate adaptation strategy aimed at making the urban enviro

The Symbiotic Districts research project examines dimensions influencing energy self-sufficiency at neighborhood scale by integrating parameters related to buildings, infrastructure, mobility, food, goods and services. Transposing industrial ecology tools to urban design, it establishes a reliable basis for addressing the issue of energy in future sustainable urban districts. This contribution presents the results of a case study on an urban sector in the city of Yverdon-les-Bains (Switzerland). Taking life

Developing building projects with low environmental impacts is a real challenge, yet a problem faced every day by designers. To that end, in the design process, iteration between propositions and objectives have been used that are complex and time consumption. The impact targets leading to low-carbon buildings have the potential to simplify this complexity and saving time in the building design process. This study introduces a methodology for the definition of impact targets for components and systems of bu

The increasing popularity of parametric design tools goes hand in hand with the use of building performance simulation (BPS) tools from the early design phase. However, current methods require a significant computational time and a high number of parameter ...

In Switzerland, as in many European countries, new energy directives focus on decreasing the carbon footprint of buildings by promoting passive and active energy strategies. Among the latter, Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), which function both as ...

This paper presents the outcome of a study based on the early-stage analysis of six virtual urban-scale designs located in Bern, Switzerland. A preliminary solar potential evaluation methodology is devised, inspired by previous studies, to allow the compar ...

Regeneration of urban areas from neighborhoods in transition to innovative components Research at the LAST aims to contribute to transitions towards sustainability in the built environment by integrating environmental, socio-cultural, and economic parameters in the architectural project. The research projects fall within the broader context of quality; they focus on supporting the emergence of new knowledge, revealing the potential for innovation potential that can be transposed into architectural productio

This paper presents the URBIUS method, developed to assess the sustainability of urban renewal strategies at neighbourhood scale. The conceptual framework of URBIUS gathers the main issues of urban sustainability, including social, economic and environment ...

Product of a research cooperation between three Swiss universities - the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne's School of Architecture, the School of Architecture and Technology in Fribourg, and the University of Fribourg - the Smart Living Lab is a research and development center for the built environment of the future. This high-tech structure also serves as an emblem of the cooperation's aim to translate academic research into actual buildings. A new series of books, entitled Towards 2050 will be sho

In the early phases of the building design process, decisions are made on certain geometrical parameters, which strongly dictate the future performance of the building. To support decision- making, an understanding of the relation between design parameters ...

This open access book is focused on the intersection between urban brownfields and the sustainability transitions of metreopolitan areas, cities and neighbourhoods. It provides both a theoretical and practical approach to the topic, offering a thorough introduction to urban brownfields and regeneration projects as well as an operational monitoring tool. Neighbourhoods in Transition begins with an overview of historic urban development and strategic areas in the hearts of towns to be developed. It then defin

Because of their inherent complexity, urban brownfield regeneration projects are long-term operations. The study of the evolution from urban brownfield site to a new—and ideally sustainable—neighbourhood through a regeneration process has led to the identi ...

The concept of sustainable development applied to built environment involves finding a long-term balance between environmental, socio-cultural and economic objectives. From an operational perspective, the challenge is to imagine concrete actions that foster the simultaneous emergence of positive effects in more than one of these dimensions. Regarding the architectural design, it is a question of implementing coherent strategies that are technically appropriate, environmentally friendly, economically viable
