Myoblast transfer therapy has been extensively studied for a wide range of clinical applications, such as tissue engineering for muscular loss, cardiac surgery or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy treatment. However, this approach has been hindered by numerous l ...

Patellar fracture and anterior knee pain remain major complications after Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Patient-specific finite element (FE) models should help improve understanding of these complications through estimation of joint and bone mechanics. Ho ...

This invited review covers research areas of central importance for orthopaedic and maxillofacial bone tissue repair, including normal fracture healing and healing problems, biomaterial scaffolds for tissue engineering, mesenchymal and foetal stem cells, e ...

Background: The nucleus pulposus is extremely deformable and it is not uncommon to observe strain amplitudes as large as 12.5% in physiological loading conditions. It has been shown that the nucleus pulposus contributes to the damping properties of the int ...

Current restrictions for human cell-based therapies have been related to technological limitations with regards to cellular proliferation capacity (simple culture conditions), maintenance of differentiated phenotype for primary human cell culture and trans ...

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that mechanical properties of artificial osteochondral constructs can be improved by a tissue-engineered zone of calcification at the bone-hydrogel interface. Experimental push-off tests were performed ...

The initial stability of cementless femoral components is crucial for the long-term success of total hip arthroplasty. This has been reported in animal and clinical studies. Until now, the stability was evaluated by the measurement of relative micromotion ...

The goal of this study was to develop a method that identifies optimal elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, porosity and permeability values for mechanically stressed bone substitute. It was hypothesized that porous bone substitute that favors the transport o ...

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is one of the prevailing medical concern and actual health cost. Industries and academic institutions research for therapeutic solutions going from drugs to complete and partial arthroplasty devices as well as engineered tissues. Nucleus pulposus replacement devices (NPRD), and particularly promising hydrogels, are being developed to restore the ``physiological'' state of the intervertebral disc. This project consists in investigating viscoelastic properties of hydroge

Cell seeding in a biomaterial is an important process for tissue engineering applications. It helps to modulate tissue formation or to control initial conditions for mechanobiological studies. The compression release-induced suction (CRIS) seeding techniqu ...

An obvious means to improve the fixation of a cancellous bone screw is to augment the surrounding bone with cement. Previous studies have shown that bone augmentation with Calcium Phosphate (CaP) cement significantly improves screw fixation. Nevertheless, ...

The interfacial micromotion is closely associated to the long-term success of cementless hip prostheses. Various techniques have been proposed to measure them, but only a few number of points over the stem surface can be measured simultaneously. In this pa ...

Patella-related complications after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain a major clinical concern. Previous studies have suggested that increased postoperative patellar bone strain could be related to such complications, but there is limited knowledge on p ...

The weak mechanical performance and fragility of hydrogels limit their application as biomaterials for load bearing applications. The origin of this weakness has been explained by the low resistance to chains breakage composing the hydrogel and to the crac ...

Biomechanics may be considered as central in the development of bone tissue engineering. The initial mechanical aspects are essential to the outcome of a functional tissue engineering approach, so are aspects of interface micromotion, bone ingrowths inside ...

Permeability is an overarching mechanical parameter encompassing the effects of porosity, pore size, and interconnectivity of porous structures. This parameter directly influences transport of soluble particles and indirectly regulates fluid pressure and v ...

Background: Articular surfaces reconstruction is essential in total shoulder arthroplasty. Because of the limited glenoid bone support, thin glenoid component could improve anatomical reconstruction, but adverse mechanical effects might appear. Methods: Wi ...

Sports helmets provide incomplete protection against brain injuries. Here we aim to improve helmet liner efficiency by employing a novel approach that optimizes their properties. By exploiting a finite element model that simulates head impacts, we develope ...

Determination of the sub-chondral bone density, or more precisely the internal density spot, can be used to evaluate the capability of a knee to sustain normal kinematics. To use this technique as a mean of knee kinematics control, the position of the internal density spot must be determined in a reproducible way. This paper presents a definition of an intrinsic polar coordinate system, allowing to measure the position of the internal density spot of the tibial plateau. Tests of reproducibility gave good re

Background. Reversed shoulder arthroplasty is an accepted treatment for glenohumeral arthritis associated to rotator cuff deficiency. For most reversed shoulder prostheses, the baseplate of the glenoid component is uncemented and its primary stability is p ...
