The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

Correct positioning of the tibial component in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) must take into account both an optimal bone coverage (defined by a maximal cortical bearing with posteromedial and anterolateral support) and satisfactory patellofemoral tracking. Consequently, a compromise position must be found by the surgeon during the operation to simultaneously meet these two requirements. Moreover, tibial tray positioning depends upon the tibial torsion, which has been shown to act mainly in the proximal quar

An alternative intracranial aneurysm embolic agent is emerging in the form of hydrogels due to their ability to be injected in liquid phase and solidify in situ. Hydrogels have the ability to fill an aneurysm sac more completely compared to solid implants ...

A good fixation of osteosynthesis implants is crucial for a successful bone healing but often difficult to achieve in osteoporotic patients. One possible solution to this issue is the local delivery of bisphosphonates in direct proximity to the implants, A ...

In clinical situations, bone defects are often located at load bearing sites. Tissue engineering scaffolds are future bone substitutes and hence they will be subjected to mechanical stimulation. The goal of this study was to test if cyclic loading can be u ...

Background: Local bisphosphonate delivery may be a solution to prevent periprosthetic bone loss and improve orthopedic implants fixation. In load-bearing implants, periprosthetic bone is exposed to high mechanical demands, which in normal conditions induce ...

Large knee chondral defects remain a major challenge in orthopaedic surgery and may lead to osteoarthritis. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is a widely used regenerative therapy; current techniques have inherent limitations related to cell delivery, retention, and integration. This study investigates a novel adhesive hydrogel as a cell carrier for enhanced therapeutic delivery in cartilage repair. This injectable hydrogel can lead to a paradigm shift in ACI through removing the need for membranes

Multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa has increased progressively and impedes further regression in mortality in burn patients. Such wound infections serve as bacterial reservoir for nosocomial infections and are associated with signi cant morbidity ...

To clarify the role of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha on osteoblast functions in the presence of metal particles, two human osteoblast-like cell lines (MG-63 and SaOS-2) were cultured with TNF-alpha in the presence or absence of titanium particles in vitro. A combination of TNF-alpha and titanium particles showed additive effects on inhibition of cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase production. On the other hand, production of interleukin-6, which is well known to induce osteoclastogenesis and to

Developing hydrogels with optimal properties for specific applications is challenging as most of these properties, such as toughness, stiffness, swelling or deformability, are interrelated. The improvement of one property usually comes at the cost of anoth ...

Developing a successful bone tissue engineering strategy entails translation of experimental findings to clinical needs. A major leap forward towards this goal is developing a quantitative tool to predict spatial and temporal bone formation in scaffold. We ...

In the framework of spine traumatology, burst fractures are severe and are often caused by car accidents or by falls. The vertebra breaks under the traumatic compression and pieces of it are shattered in all directions. This type of fracture is often treated by spinal fusion using a posterior sytem with rods and pedicular screws. By decompressing the traumatic region, the fracture is allowed to heal and to restore to a physiological geometry. However, a progressive kyphosis (flexion of the spine) is clinica

Diverse cell therapy approaches constitute prime developmental prospects for managing acute or degenerative cartilaginous tissue affections, synergistically complementing specific surgical solutions. Bone marrow stimulation (i.e., microfracture) remains a ...

Articular cartilage's limited regenerative capacity is compounded by the overlooked thermomechanical factors critical to its function. Recent studies emphasize the importance of cartilage self-heating, arising predominantly from energy dissipation under ph ...

Articular cartilage, together with skin, was predicted to be one of the first tissues to be successfully engineered. However cartilage repair remains nowadays still elusive, as we are still not able to overcome the hurdles of creating biomaterials correspo ...

The Orthopedic Research Laboratory at Radboud University Nijmegen (Prof. Nico Verdonschot) has developed a surgical technique based on bone graft impaction in case of revision total hip arthroplasty. During this development, in vitro mechanical tests have been performed and validated allowing to test other materials in the context of acetabulum bone filling. The goal of the project will then to test the scaffold developed at Lausanne using the biomechanical approach available at Nijmegen. In parallel, a FEM

Articular cartilage is a soft tissue showing inelastic properties. Under cyclic loading, inelastic materials may dissipate mechanical energy into heat. In knee cartilage, due to an intrinsic reduced heat convection related to its avascularity, a local temp ...

Bisphosphonates are known for their strong inhibitory effect on bone resorption. Their influence on bone formation however is less clear. In this study we investigated the spatio-temporal effect of locally delivered Zoledronate on peri-implant bone formati ...

The development of a conceptual framework to test different viscoelastic constitutive laws is presented. This framework has the advantage of satisfying a priori the thermodynamic restrictions and is valid for large deformations. In addition, the different mechanical contributions are separated according to the time scale of their effects. As an illustration of its ability to model the immediate, short time memory and long time memory contributions, the framework is used to identify mechanical tests performe

There is described a mandibular advancement device (10), mad. the mad comprises an upper member (11) and a lower member (12). the upper member is configured to adapt to the maxilla of the user. the lower member is configured to adapt to the mandible of the user. the mad is configured to apply a forwards and upwards force on the mandible so as to tension the hyoid bone via the genial tubercles of the user. a corresponding method for manufacturing a mad is also described.
