Background: The primary stability of cancellous screw is difficult to obtain in bone of compromised quality and failure of screw fixation is common. To overcome this problem, it is proposed to locally deliver bisphosphonate from the screw An in vivo valida ...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that ...

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the malpositioning of the humeral component can preclude the long-term success of anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty. The goal of this study was to evaluate the mechanical consequences of superior and inferior malpositi ...

It is a clinical challenge to obtain a sufficient orthopedic implant fixation in weak osteoporotic bone. When the primary implant fixation is poor, micromotions occur at the bone-implant interface, activating osteoclasts, which leads to implant loosening. ...

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that bone mineral density increase following bisphosphonates treatments may be explained by the influence of the drug on the mechanical bone remodeling parameters. BACKGROUND: Patients treated with bisphosphonates continuously increase their bone mineral density. This increase is explained in the first 12-18 months following the treatment by the filling of the transient remodeling deficit. Recently, results of a clinical study of alendronate treatment over 7 years still show a con

Purpose The aim of this study is to quantitatively compare the difference in primary stability between collarless and collared versions of the same femoral stem. Specifically, we tested differences in subsidence and micromotion. Methods Collarless and coll ...

Articular cartilage focal lesion remains an intractable challenge in sports medicine, and autologous chondrocytes' implantation (ACI) is one of the most commonly utilized treatment modality for this ailment. However, the current ACI technique requires two ...

A successful bone tissue engineering strategy entails producing bone-scaffold construct with adequate mechanical properties. Apart from the mechanical properties of the scaffold itself, the forming bone inside the scaffold also adds to the strength of the ...

Hypothesis: The nonanatomical design of reverse shoulder prostheses induce medial displacement of the center of rotation, impingements and may reduce the mobility of the shoulder. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that during activities of da ...

Background: orthopaedic surgeons often face clinical situations where improved screw holding power in cancellous bone is needed. Injectable calcium phosphate cements are one option to enhance fixation. Methods: paired screw pullout tests were undertaken in ...

Articular cartilage presents a mechanically sensitive tissue. Chondrocytes, the sole cell type residing in the tissue, perceive and react to physical cues as signals that significantly modulate their behavior. Hyaline cartilage is a connective tissue with ...

The present invention relates to a device to photocure and/or photoactivate a photosensitive material. The device comprises several subsystems to transmit light towards an area of interest where a photosensitive material is applied as well as to collect li ...

Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is an accepted and most successfully used treatment for different shoulder pathologies. Different risk factors for the failure of the prosthesis are known. A pathological scapular orientation, observed in elderly people or ...

For tissue engineering, several cell types and tissues have been proposed as starting material. Allogenic skin products available for therapeutic usage are mostly developed with cell culture and with foreskin tissue of young individuals. Fetal skin cells o ...

We report on the modeling of a photopolymerizable hydrogel and its application as a replacement of the interior of the intervertebral disc (so called Nucleus Pulposus). The hydrogel is initially injected in its liquid form and then photopolymerized via a s ...

The potential of human fetal bone cells for successful bone regeneration has been shown in vivo. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the seeding of these cells in porous poly-(L-lactic acid)/ ß-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds improved the bone form ...

Orthopedic implant failures are often associated with peri-implant osteolysis. Particles generated from the wear process have been suspected to play an important role in this situation. Indeed, the peri-implant osteolysis could be due to the presence of particles stimulating the osteoclastogenesis process. We hypothesize then that the presence of a low particle concentration positively influences osteoblasts to produce osteoclastogenesis factors. If true, this hypothesis would then support the idea that the

Reliable in vitro models are required to understand the ability of cells to respond and adapt to mechanical stimuli. To mimic and interface with the microenvironment, lab-on-a-chip devices and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) provide excellent options ...

Physiological loading result to finite and finite rate of deformations of soft tissues such as ligament, tendons, and the annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc. Under these conditions, these soft tissues exhibit viscoelastic effects such as strain-stiffening, creep and relaxation that have important implications in the stability of joints. Although the effects are significant, viscoelasticity has, however, only recently been taken into account in biomechanical studies. We have developed a versatile vi
