Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains a formidable clinical challenge because of the lack of vascularization and adequate cell numbers in the joint cavity. In this study, we developed a novel strategy to mimic the early stage of repair in ...

Subject-specific modelling of Total Knee Arthroplasty could be an efficient method to preoperatively evaluate surgical options. In particular, the question of the necessity of patellar resurfacing is still a debatable issue. The aim of this work was to val ...

Glenoid implant loosening remains a major source of failure and concern after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). It is assumed to be associated with eccentric loading and excessive bone strain, but direct measurement of bone strain after aTSA i ...

Bioresorbable scaffolds made Of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) obtained by supercritical gas foaming were recently described as suitable for tissue engineering, portraying biocompatibility with primary osteoblasts in vitro and interesting mechanical properties ...

Traction tests were performed on the bovine anterior cruciate ligament-bone complex at seven strain rates (0.1, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40%/s). Corresponding stress-strain curves showed that, for a given strain level, the stress increased with the augmentation of the strain rate. This phenomenon was important since the stress increased by a factor of three between the tests performed at the lowest and highest strain rates. The influence of the strain rate was quantified with a new variable called the "supplementa

Background: The rotator cuff muscles are the main stabilizer of the glenohumeral joint. After total shoulder arthroplasty using anterior approaches, a dysfunction of the subscapularis muscle has been reported. In the present paper we tested the hypothesis ...

Tibial bone defect is a critical problem for revision knee arthroplasty. Instead of using metallic spacer or cement, biodegradable scaffolds could be an alternative solution. A numerical model of a revision knee arthroplasty was thus developed to estimate ...

A three-dimensional computer model is used, based on the finite element method, to investigate the effects of 1-, 1.5-, and 2-cm tibial tubercle elevations and of 0.5- and 1-cm medial displacements of the tuberosity performed with different bone shingles. Patellar kinematics and patellofemoral interface peak pressure, between 45 degrees and 135 degrees of passive knee flexion are compared for these different surgical parameters with those of a normal knee not surgically treated. The shingle lengths of 3, 5,

Peri-implant bone resorption after total joint arthroplasty is a key parameter in aseptic loosening. Implant wear debris and biomechanical aspects have both been demonstrated to be part of the bone resorption process. However, neither of these two paramete ...

Photopolymerization is a common method to cure materials initially in a liquid state, such as dental implants or bone or tissue fillers. Recent advances in the development of biocompatible gel- and cement-systems open up an avenue for in situ photopolymeri ...

Particles generated from orthopedic implants through years of wear play an essential role in the aseptic loosening of a prosthesis. We have investigated the biocompatibility of these orthopedic particles on different osteoblast-like cells representative of different stages of osteoblast maturation. We found the particles induced a caspase-dependent apoptosis of osteoblasts, with less mature osteoblasts being the most susceptible. An analysis of gene expression was performed on the less mature osteoblasts, w

The aim of this study was to test the association of fetal bone cells with ceramic reinforced PLA scaffolds for tissue engineering. As animal models, the craniotomy and the femoral condyle approaches in rats were chosen to follow cortical and trabecular bone repair processes. Key findings were the observation of complete bone bridging 12 months after implantation in skulls of PLA porous structures seeded with human fetal bone cells, and a strong induction of trabecular bone ingrowth in femoral condyles 2 mo

Cartilage repair remains a major challenge in human orthopedic medicine, necessitating the application of innovative strategies to overcome existing technical and clinical limitations. Adhesive hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for cartilage r ...

The cytotoxic effect of different concentrations of titanium particles on osteoblasts was studied in vitro. It was found that the viability of the osteoblasts was inversely proportional to the particle concentration. Phagocytosis of particles by the osteoblasts was evident and was demonstrated to be responsible for cell necrosis. Moreover, during and after phagocytosis, the osteoblasts released products that were cytotoxic for other osteoblasts, as established with a conditioned medium assay. The titanium p

There still remains a barrier ahead of widespread clinical applications of upper extremity musculoskeletal models. This study is a step toward lifting this barrier for a shoulder musculoskeletal model by enhancing its realism and facilitating its applicati ...

A photopolymerizable bone filler material comprising a fluid polymeric material, a photoinitiator and a plurality of solid, polymeric optical fibers is disclosed, wherein said optical fibers are used for both illumination and reinforcement of the entire ph ...

Inquiry-based labs seek to engage students in an authentic process of scientific inquiry, where students pose and invest scientific questions. The effect of inquiry-based labs has consistently been found to be positive [1]. In addition, the results of Furtak and her colleagues underline the importance of the teacher’s role in actively guiding student activities [2]. Inquiry-based teaching was found to have a higher impact when activities are well structured, with scaffolding to assist learners, and when stu

A model of tissue differentiation at the bone-implant interface is proposed. The basic hypothesis of the model is that the mechanical environment determines the tissue differentiation. The stimulus chosen is related to the bone-implant micromotions. Equations governing the evolution of the interfacial tissue are proposed and combined with a finite element code to determine the evolution of the fibrous tissue around prostheses. The model is applied to the case of an idealized hip prosthesis.

Background In contact sports, an impact on the jaw can generate destructive stress on the tooth-bone system. Mouthguards can be beneficial in reducing the injury risk by changing the dynamics of the trauma. The material properties of mouthguards and their ...

Nucleus pulposus replacements have been subjected to highly controversial discussions over the last 40 years. Their use has not yet resulted in a positive outcome to treat herniated disc or degenerated disc disease. The main reason is that not a single imp ...
