The balancing of mechanisms consists in distributing their moving masses, inertias, and elastic components in order to achieve key mechanical properties, such as the elimination of the shaking forces and moments exported onto their supporting structure or ...

Accurate predictions of how vortices grow, evolve, and separate from aerodynamic objects are desirable for various applications ranging from autonomous aerial vehicles to wind turbines. Here, we present an experimental characterisation of the formation pro ...

The growing demand for online gait phase (GP) estimation, driven by advancements in exoskeletons and prostheses, has prompted numerous approaches in the literature. Some approaches explicitly use time, while others rely on state variables to estimate the G ...

There is a lack of knowledge about the accuracy of the Conventional Gait Model (CGM), compared to the true bone motion. Accuracy is hindered by both marker misplacement and soft-tissue artefact (STA). The effect of the lateral knee marker (KNE) misplacemen ...

Accurate real-time estimation of the gait phase (GP) is crucial for many control methods in exoskeletons and prostheses. A class of approaches to GP estimation construct the phase portrait of a segment or joint angle, and use the normalized polar angle of ...

Knee adduction moment (KAM) is correlated with the progression of medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). Although a generic gait modification can reduce the KAM in some patients, it may have a reverse effect on other patients. We proposed the "decomposed ground ...

Objective: To investigate (i) typical protocols used in research on biomechanical response to running-induced fatigue, (ii) the effect of sport-induced acute fatigue on the biomechanics of running and functional tests, and (iii) the consistency of analyzed ...

BackgroundTotal knee arthroplasty (TKA) is most frequently planned using conventional two-dimensional weight-bearing lower limb radiographs and is performed with conventional femoral and tibial cutting guides. Questions have been raised about the accuracy ...

Background: Lately, the projection of foot placement visual cues onto the floor has been considered for use in gait rehabilitation. While promising, this approach needs further basic assessment to ensure proper uses. Research question: Does following floor ...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of modifying stride length (SL) on knee adduction and flexion moments, two markers of knee loading associated with medial-compartment knee osteoarthritis (OA) progression. This study also tested if SL ...

Gait assessments in standardized settings, as part of the clinical follow-up of children with cerebral palsy (CP), may not represent gait in daily life. This study aimed at comparing gait characteristics in laboratory and real life settings on the basis of ...

Bipedal locomotion is a remarkable feature of humans. This skill is necessary for the activities of daily living. Unfortunately, many people only partially benefit from it or miss it entirely because of a disability. This may result in a slower gait, less ...

In this study, we compared a monocular computer vision (MCV)-based approach with the golden standard for collecting kinematic data on ski tracks (i.e., video-based stereophotogrammetry) and assessed its deployment readiness for answering applied research q ...

This paper investigates sensorimotor adaptation strategies of sagittal postural control in healthy subjects under kinematic constraints. A passive exoskeleton named CAPTUR, with locked ankle joints and legs motion restrained to the sagittal plane is used t ...

Inertial sensor drift is usually corrected on a single-sensor unit level. When multiple sensor units are used, mutual information from different units can be exploited for drift correction. This study introduces a method for a drift-reduced estimation of t ...

The human shoulder is a complex musculoskeletal system. Knowledge about its kinematics and dynamics can help improve associated treatments. However, to date direct measurements of these quantities can be only granted through invasive investigations or expe ...

Roentgen stereophotogrammetry analysis technique allows an accurate measurement of knee joint prosthesis position and orientation using two X-ray images. Although this technique is used generally during static procedure, it is possible to use it with a bip ...

In one embodiment, the exoskeleton structure is fastened to the body of the user by a brace and at the foot level. The exoskeleton includes at least one set of three joints corresponding to the hip abduction/adduction, the hip flexion/extension and the kne ...

In the field of marine robotics, the problem of range based underwater target localization can be defined as that of localizing an unknown - fixed or moving - target from a surface vehicle called the tracker, using range information available about the tar ...

A co-rotating scroll machine operable as compressor or expander, comprises a transmission and guidance mechanism (9,10) for first and second scroll plates (7,8), having three transmission and guidance units (9,10) uniformly distributed around the scroll pl ...
