In this work, we present a concept that leverages the strong piezoelectric polarization field in InGaN, which counteracts the external electric field at reverse bias. We show that despite the smaller InGaN band-gap and lower critical electric field, its st ...

We demonstrate the use of both pixelated differential phase contrast (DPC) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and off-axis electron holography (EH) for the measurement of electric fields and assess the advantages and limitations of each techn ...

The control of movement and orientation of gas-phase molecules has become the focus of many research areas in molecular physics. Here, ND3 molecules are polarized in a segmented, curved electrostatic guide and adiabatically aligned inside a rotatable mass ...

The response of simple plasmonic nanorods to polarized illumination is studied in detail. Depending on the orientation of that polarization with respect to the symmetry axes of the nanostructure, a chiral response can occur, which can be analyzed through a ...

Transition-metal dichalcogenide bilayers exhibit a rich exciton landscape including layer-hybridized excitons, i.e. excitons which are of partly intra- and interlayer nature. In this work, we study hybrid exciton-exciton interactions in naturally stacked W ...

Keeping up with our constantly connected lifestyle of instant messages and video streaming has its repercussions. Data centers have been gobbling up resources becoming a significant share of the energy used worldwide. To keep up with demand and curb the en ...

In this paper, we present the characteristics of current, electric fields and modeling approaches of lightning M-component mode of charge transfer. We consider both the classical M-components (occurring after return strokes) and M-component-type ICC (Initi ...

In the past decade, optical diffraction tomography has gained a lot of attention for its ability to create label-free three-dimensional (3D) images of the refractive index distribution of biological samples using scattered fields measured through holograph ...

The significant discrepancy observed between the predicted and experimental switching fields in correlated insulators under a DC electric field far-from-equilibrium necessitates a reevaluation of current microscopic understanding. Here we show that an elec ...

Molecular hydrogen adsorbed on graphene was investigated by analyzing rotational excitation spectra obtained with a gate-tunable scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Through the shift of the rotational excitation energy, the tunability of physisorbed H2 on ...

Composite films based on dispersions of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrixes were prepared in the presence of multiwalled-carbon-nanotubes (MWCNT), using xanthan gum (XG) as dispersant. Films were prepared by spin coating and ...

In this work, the emergence of polarization and electro-mechanical coupling in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 â PbTiO3 was investigated by means of thermally stimulated current, and nonlinear dielectric and electro-mechanical measurements. The pre ...

While metasurfaces (MSs) are constructed from deeply subwavelength unit cells, they are generally electrically large and full-wave simulations of the complete structure are computationally expensive. Thus, to reduce this high computational cost, nonuniform ...

The understanding and manipulation of nanoscale analytes is a central theme in nanotechnology and has been one of the main driving forces behind the development of this field as we know it today. Furthermore, such a technology has the potential to also rev ...

Providing an additional degree of freedom for binary information encoding and nonreciprocal information transmission, chiral single photons have become a new research frontier in quantum optics. Without using complex external conditions (e.g., magnetic fie ...

Electroadhesion is a versatile and controllable adhesion mechanism that has been used extensively in robotics. Soft electroadhesion embodies electrostatic adhesion in soft materials and is required for shape-adaptive and safe grasping of curved objects and ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are interesting soft actuators compared to other actuation technologies owing to large achievable actuation strains, high energy density and fast actuation. However, because DEAs need to be operated under high electric ...

In this thesis, we mainly utilize silver to construct the meta-atoms. Although suffering from easily oxidized, its excellent lossless property throughout the visible range makes it suitable for study. When preserved properly, silver-made metasurfaces can s ...

Piezoelectrics are materials that linearly deform in response to an applied electric field. As a fundamental prerequisite, piezoelectric materials must have a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. For more than a century, this has remained a major obstacle ...

The EU FASTGRID project aimed at improving the REBCO conductor in order to enhance its economical attractiveness for the Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). Two approaches were simultaneously investigated: i) the reduction of the tape length thro ...
