A relation for an adequate pore fraction needed to obtain residual Si and C free composites via reactive Si-X alloy infiltration is presented. The volume ratio of SiC and carbonaceous phase, the composition of the infiltrating liquid and the apparent densi ...

Elastomer composites are prepared by infiltrating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into a porous ceramic structure of nanoparticles. This method differs from the conventional approach, where particles are dispersed into the polymer matrix, since here, the polym ...

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibit excellent properties and are compatible with many shaping techniques due to the liquid character of the preceramic polymers (PCPs). Furthermore, their properties are adjustable by modifying the precursor composition ...

Silicon infiltrated silicon carbide (SiSiC) is one of the most promising and economical non-oxide ceramic matrix composites for high-temperature structural applications. In recent years infiltration by Si-alloys instead of pure Si has become popular to avo ...

Summarizing the work of nearly a decade of research on spark plasma sintering (SPS), a review is given on the specificities and key factors to be considered in SPS of ceramic materials, based on the authors’ own research. Alumina is used primarily as a mod ...

A multi-step process is developed to create a nacre-like ceramic/metal composite. First, a slurry of Ni-coated alumina platelets and NiO nano-particles is directionally freeze-cast and the ice is sublimed, creating a foam with aligned lamellar walls contai ...

In this study, SiC ceramic substrates were prepared with 99.5% silicon carbide powders which were came from waste silicon mud during the manufacturing process of solar cells. It is found that a SiO2 layer with 50 nm in thickness is present on the SiC surfa ...

Resonant waveguide gratings (RWGs), also known as guided mode resonant (GMR) gratings or waveguide-mode resonant gratings, are dielectric structures where these resonant diffractive elements benefit from lateral leaky guided modes from UV to microwave freq ...

Herein, the assembly of CsPbBr3 QD/AlOx inorganic nanocomposites, by using atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the growth of the amorphous alumina matrix (AlOx), is described as a novel protection scheme for such QDs. The nucleation and growth of AlOx on the ...

This paper presents a method of manufacturing 3D metamaterial structures using laser radiation. Our proposed material, aluminum nitride (AlN), by interaction of a high-energy laser beam undergoes a direct metallization process, a result of which a conducti ...

Ceramic surface microstructuring is a rapidly growing field with a variety of applications in tribology, wetting, biology, and so on. However, there are limitations to large-area microstructuring and fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) micro free forms. ...

Solvent cast and compression molded composite films based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), containing pristine and silylated BaTiO3 particles, were poled, and their electromechanical response (d(33)), their dielectric properties, and the cry ...

Transition element dopants (e.g., Y, La) are commonly used as sintering aids in polycrystalline alumina ceramics, which segregate to the grain boundaries and control the grain-boundary mobility. However, due to the extremely thin (

Small amounts of anion impurities (e.g. Cl), which are incorporated during the synthesis of ceramic powders, can affect the properties and microstructure of the final sintered ceramic. The effect of anion impurities is a little studied and poorly understoo ...

This work describes the fabrication and test of a high temperature (+200°C) capable high frequency transformer. It was manufactured using Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology, which allowed the complex multilayer structure of ceramic and meta ...

Beyond the possibility of finding a lead-free piezoceramics as replacement for PZT, the world-wide research has focused on other mechanisms of electro-mechanical coupling alternative to piezoelectricity, such as electrostriction and, more recently, flexoel ...

Three kinds of ceramics, zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA), alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), were tested as anvil materials, mainly for the purpose of neutron scattering study under high pressure. ZTA with non-toroidal ...

Colloidal processing is a key aspect in modern ceramic processing but most formulations are found empirically. The need for a better knowledge based design of suspension formulation can be achieved by using interparticle potential modelling linked to rheol ...

Micron- and submicron-sized barium titanate (BaTiO3) particles, untreated and surface modified with aminopropyl triethoxy silane, were incorporated in poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) to fabricate composites with up to 60 vol% of ceramic phase. ...

A five-layer stack of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films with Pt electrodes was fabricated for potential applications in nanoactuator systems. The 1 mu m thick PZT films were deposited by a sol-gel technique, the platinum electrodes by sputtering. Th ...
