The success of plastics heavily relies on fast melt processing methods used for large-scale industrial manufacturing, including injection molding. The hierarchical structure of the solid polymer depends on material selection combined with processing condit ...

Injection molding is known to create a layered anisotropicmorphologyacross the sample thickness due to varying shear and cooling ratesduring the manufacturing process. In this study, scanning small-angleX-ray scattering was used to visualize and quantify t ...

BackgroundOpen reduction and plate osteosynthesis are considered as a successful technique for the treatment of proximal humerus fracture (PHF) despite high complication rates. The objective of our study was to review the clinical outcome and complications ...

The drive to develop cartilage implants for the treatment of major defects in the musculoskeletal sys-tem has resulted in a major research thrust towards developing biomaterial devices for cartilage repair. Investigational devices for the restoration of ar ...

Supramolecular interactions play an important role in defining the structure and the resulting mechanical properties of materials. For instance, interchain hydrogen-bonding in PAs gives them superior strength and stiffness in engineering materials, while t ...

The tribocorrosion mechanisms of a Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta (TNZT) alloy rubbing against a zirconia ball in a Phosphate Buffered Solution (PBS) were analyzed by considering the mechanical and chemical interactions that lead to the material degradation. To understand th ...

The brain is an ultra-soft viscoelastic matrix. Sub-kPa hydrogels match the brain's mechanical properties but are challenging to manipulate in an implantable format. We propose a simple fabrication and processing sequence, consisting of de-hydration, patte ...

With the development of modern medical techniques, the application of orthopedic implants has been continually increasing in recent years. Passive materials, such as Ti and its alloys as well as CoCrMo alloys, are widely used in artificial joints due to th ...

As an important connection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, rivers input multitudinous (micro)plastics into the oceans. However, comparisons of field and estimated riverine inputs of (micro)plastics and contributions of multiple parameters are limited ...

Purpose Concerns remain about potential increased wear with dual mobility cups related to the multiple articulations involved in this specific design of implant. This finite element analysis study aimed to compare polyethylene (PE) wear between dual mobili ...

The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

Introduction: Transfemoral amputations are known to compromise balance control capabilities, thus increasing the probability of falling. Current research in robotic prostheses is exploring novel strategies to assess the risk of fall and, if required, enabl ...

Knee adduction moment (KAM) is correlated with the progression of medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). Although a generic gait modification can reduce the KAM in some patients, it may have a reverse effect on other patients. We proposed the "decomposed ground ...

Microplastics pollution in river systems has generated great concern; however, few studies have focused on the contributions of multiple influencing factors to microplastics in river systems. In the current study, we utilized data on microplastics in surfa ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

Studies focused only on surface water may underestimate microplastic abundance in aquatic environments. This was the first survey to investigate the vertical (surface, intermediate, and bottom waters) distribution and composition of microplastics (MPs) in ...

The shoulder is the joint with the largest range of motion in the human body. It is composed of three articulations, the glenohumeral articulation providing about two thirds of its mobility which is, also the most complex and fragile of the three. For this ...

Neural interfaces are devices that are implanted into the body and interface electrically with the central (CNS) or peripheral nervous system. They are inserted surgically for short periods of time or chronically to diagnose or treat several neural disease ...

The introduction of modular design in total hip arthroplasty has enabled the use of different materials in one single configuration and the adjustment of the prosthesis to the patient's body, and facilitated medical revisions. However, modularity leads to ...

Bipedal locomotion is a remarkable feature of humans. This skill is necessary for the activities of daily living. Unfortunately, many people only partially benefit from it or miss it entirely because of a disability. This may result in a slower gait, less ...
