Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

The shift towards DC power distribution networks, enabled by power electronics technologies, is changing the nature of electrical power systems. Nowadays, DC power distribution networks can effectively support the high penetration of distributed energy res ...

With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), maintaining power grid stability has become a significant challenge. To address this issue, EV charging control strategies have been developed to manage the switch between vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and gr ...

The European Union's Green Deal aims for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To reach this goal, a massive integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the power grid is necessary. As RES become a large part of the electricity genera ...

The ongoing electrification of the transportation fleet will increase the load on the electric power grid. Since both the transportation network and the power grid already experience periods of significant stress, joint analyses of both infrastructures wil ...

In this paper, we present a model for the analytical computation of the power flow sensitivity coefficients (SCs) for hybrid AC/DC networks. The SCs are defined as the partial derivates of the nodal voltages with respect to the active and reactive power in ...

The transition from fossil-based to renewable energy systems requires the integration of decentralized energy technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV). Therefore, it is essential to evaluate multi-energy systems with different spatial and time resoluti ...

The global imperative to transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewable alternatives has become increasingly urgent in the pursuit of sustainable and renewable power generation. This paradigm shift necessitates innovative approaches to manag ...

We demonstrate the use of both pixelated differential phase contrast (DPC) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and off-axis electron holography (EH) for the measurement of electric fields and assess the advantages and limitations of each techn ...

The thesis explores the issue of fairness in the real-time (RT) control of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) hosted in active distribution networks (ADNs) in the presence of uncertainties by proposing and experimentally validating appropriate control ...

The aqueous zinc-ion battery is promising as grid scale energy storage device, but hindered by the instable electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, we report the lean-water ionic liquid electrolyte for aqueous zinc metal batteries. The lean-water ionic li ...

A reversible photo-electrochemical device operating under concentrated irradiation could offer a stand-alone solution for producing solar fuel (in photo-driven electrolysis mode) and power (in fuel cell mode). This strategy would present the advantage of h ...

Increasing adoption of smart meters and phasor measurement units (PMUs) in power distribution networks are enabling the adoption of data-driven/model-less control schemes to mitigate grid issues such as over/under voltages and power-flow congestions. Howev ...

The Bio Image and Signal Processing (BISP) Technical Committee (TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) promotes activities within the broad technical field of biomedical image and signal processing. Areas of interest include medical and biological ...

As the share of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs) in power distribution systems increases, hybrid AC/DC distribution systems are drawing more interest. Indeed, CIDERs usually rely on DC power and hybrid AC/DC grids with few Network ...

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures and affects more than 50 million people worldwide. Implantable medical devices (IMDs) are regarded as effective tools to cure patients who suffer from refractory epilepsy. Se ...

We discuss the effects of image scanning microscopy using doughnut beam illumination on the properties of signal strength and integrated intensity. Doughnut beam illumination can give better optical sectioning and background rejection than Airy disk illumi ...

The vibrational response of solid materials and structural components is substantially governed by their mechanical and geometrical properties. Low-frequency vibrations and modal frequencies are sensitive to global geometrical deviations, while high-freque ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia; it will affect one in four adults worldwide in their lifetime. AF has serious consequences, including drastically increased risk of stroke. Catheter ablation surgery is an established treatmen ...
