The resolving power, chemical sensitivity and non-invasive nature of NMR have made it an established technique for in vivo studies of large organisms both for research and clinical applications. NMR would clearly be beneficial for analysis of entities at t ...

The performance of myoelectric control highly depends on the features extracted from surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals. We propose three new sEMG features based on the kernel density estimation. The trimmed mean of density (TMD), the entropy of dens ...

In humans, mice, and other mammals key internal organs such as the gut, the lungs, the pancreas, and the liver all derive from the same embryonic tissue: the endoderm. The development of all of these structures thus depends on a same set of early cells, an ...

Algorithms are everywhere. The recipe for the frangipane cake is an algorithm. If all the listed ingredients are available and the cook is sufficiently deft, after a finite number of small, well-defined steps a delicious dessert will exit the oven. Now, wh ...

The use of drones in search and rescue (SAR) missions can be very cognitively demanding. Since high levels of cognitive workload can negatively affect human performance, there is a risk of compromising the mission and leading to failure with catastrophic o ...

Asymmetric cell divisions play key roles in generating cellular diversity during embryogenesis, and in tissue homeostasis during postembryonic life. Particular asymmetric cell divisions producing differentially sized daughter cells were described in many s ...

A total number of 1092 embryos, originated from 168 couples that underwent IVF cycles, were analyzed in this study. The embryos were cultivated in a continuous culture and monitored using the time lapse system EmbryoScope. The microscopic images of the fer ...

Some of the earliest transcripts produced in fertilized human and mouse oocytes code for DUX, a double homeodomain protein that promotes embryonic genome activation (EGA). Deleting Dux by genome editing at the 1- to 2-cell stage in the mouse impairs EGA an ...

Humans use their hands mainly for grasping and manipulating objects, performing simple and dexterous tasks. The loss of a hand may significantly affect one's working status and independence in daily life. A restoration of the grasping ability is important ...

We present a texture-driven parametric snake for semi-automatic segmentation of a single and closed structure in an image. We propose a new energy functional that combines intensity and texture information. The two types of image information are balanced u ...

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a suitable model organism in drug screening. Traditionally worms are grown on agar plates, posing many challenges for long-term culture and phenotyping of animals under identical conditions. Microfluidics allows for ' ...

During reach-to-grasp motions, the Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the arm varies depending on motion stage. The variability of the EMG signals results in low classification accuracy during the reaching phase, delaying the activation of the prosthesis. ...

Computer-graders have been in regular use in the context of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The automatic grading of programs presents an opportunity to assess and provide tailored feedback to large classes, while featuring at the same time a number o ...

The Caenorhabditis elegans embryo is a widely used model for the functional analysis of dynamic cellular processes, such as chromosome segregation, cytokinesis or lineage analysis. However, the conventional embryo preparation method that relies on manually ...

Mammalian Host-Cell Factor 1 (HCF-1), a transcriptional co-regulator, plays important roles during the cell-division cycle in cell culture, embryogenesis as well as adult tissue. In mice, HCF-1 is encoded by the X-chromosome-linked Hcfc1 gene. Induced Hcfc ...

One of the challenges of using brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) over extended periods of time is the variation of the users' performance across different experimental days. The goal of the current study is to propose a performance estimator for an electroe ...

Mining useful clusters from high dimensional data has received significant attention of the computer vision and pattern recognition community in the recent years. Linear and non-linear dimensionality reduction has played an important role to overcome the c ...

Being able to efficiently segment a developing embryo from background clutter constitutes an important step in automated monitoring of human embryonic cells. State-of-the-art automatic segmentation methods remain ill-suited to handle the complex behavior a ...

An important step in understanding biological rhythms is the control of period. A multicellular, rhythmic patterning system termed the segmentation clock is thought to govern the sequential production of the vertebrate embryo's body segments, the somites. ...
