Flexoelectricity refers to the electric polarisation induced by a mechanical strain gradient. By comparison with other mechanoelectric conversion approaches, the flexoelectric effect can occur in both symmetric and asymmetric dielectric materials and exhibit pronounced effects at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a flexoelectric effect in a flexible nanofluidic device comprising two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) films. Free-standing GO films are produced to construct the aligned m

Gas evolution in classical alkaline water electrolysers strongly influences electrochemical performance through bubble accumulation at electrode surfaces and within electrolyte channels. Multiphysics modelling using COMSOL software is employed to systematically investigate gas bubble behaviour in both classical finite-gap and zero-gap alkaline water electrolyser configurations. The effects on gas bubble formation of key cell design parameters, including electrode height, as well as operating conditions, suc

Employing the three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) topology for the LLC resonant DC-DC converter and utilizing the integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) has enabled realization of a MW-level direct current transformer (DCT). Due to the use of three-level modulation only for soft-start and current limiting and two-level modulation in normal operation, design of static and dynamic voltage balancing snubbers is not trivial. While snubber capacitors in parallel with each IGCT ensure dynamic voltage

A metasurface is constituted of an array of scattering particles arranged within a two-dimensional lattice. By tuning the physical parameters of both the particles and the lattice, it is possible to engineer the electromagnetic response of the metasurface. In this work, we are specifically interested in modeling and controlling the angular scattering response of a metasurface illuminated by an obliquely impinging plane wave with arbitrary polarization.

Head-to-head and tail-to-tail 180 degrees domain walls in a finite isolated ferroelectric sample are theoretically studied using Landau theory. The full set of equations, suitable for numerical calculations, is developed. The explicit expressions for the polarization profile across the walls are derived for several limiting cases and wall widths are estimated. It is shown analytically that different regimes of screening and different dependences for the width of charged domain walls on the temperature and p

In this paper, we report on the integration technique and fabrication of a scanning probe interrogating the location of charges and their tracks inside quantum devices. Our unique approach is to pattern the charged sensor into a high topography micromechanical structure. A single-electron transistor (SET) is directly integrated onto the microfabricated cantilever that extends out from the body of a scanning force microscope (SFM) probe of standard dimensions. In a novel tactic and by reversing their traditi

Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRB) are large stationary electricity storage systems with many potential applications in a deregulated and decentralized network. Flow batteries (FB) store chemical energy and generate electricity by a redox reaction between vanadium ions dissolved in the electrolytes. The most significant feature of the FB is maybe the modularity of their power (kW) and energy (kWh) ratings which are independent of each other. In fact, the power is defined by the size and number of cells whe

As the performances of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) get attractive, long term degradation becomes the main issue for this technology. Therefore it is essential to localise the origin of degradation and to understand its mechanisms in order to find solutions and to improve SOFC durability. Microstructural evolution of anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) during medium-term stack testing has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A new technique is presented using low acceleration

We formulate an approach to the size effect problem in ferroelectric-electrode systems where ab initio calculations are combined with a phenomenological framework. The parameters of the model can be extracted from the calculations, while experimentally verifiable predictions can be made on thick films. We illustrate this approach by applying it to SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 heterostructures with different terminations of the metal-oxide electrodes.

Incorporation of nanoparticles into photostructurable polymer materials enables the engineering of novel, highly integrated micro/nanosystems (MEMS/NEMS) with enhanced intrinsic functional properties. For instance, nanoparticles with (semi)conducting, optical or magnetic properties can be incorporated into polymers in order to convey their inherent functionalities to the final material, which can then be exploited for sensor and actuator applications. The current challenge is two-fold: (a) the incorporation

Recently electrically conducting SPM probes were used as read/write sensor of magneto-resistive nanopillars and ferroelectric domains in the development of >1 Tb/inch2 data storage. Since metal coated (platinum (Pt) or Pt/iridium) silicon (Si) probes are not suitable at high current densities, probes with an entire metallic tip and high electrical conductivity (i.e. low contact resistance) form a solution. We present the fabrication and characterization of hybrid SPM probes with full metallic cantilever and

Recently electrically conducting SPM probes were used as read/write sensor of magneto-resistive nanopillars and ferroelectric domains in the development of >1 Tb/inch2 data storage. Since metal coated (platinum (Pt) or Pt/iridium) silicon (Si) probes are not suitable at high current densities, probes with an entire metallic tip form a solution, such as tungsten or platinum. We present the fabrication of a hybrid SPM probe with full platinum cantilever and tip. The body of the probe consists of the negative

We study the electronic structure and the dielectric permittivity of ultrathin oxide layers on Si(I 00) substrates. By considering two different Si(l 00)-SiO2 interface models, we first show that the electronic structure in the interfacial oxide differs from the corresponding bulk counterpart due to silicon-induced gap states. Then, we calculate the permittivity of the first few angstroms of the oxide within a density-functional approach. For sub-nanometric oxides, we find that the oxide permittivity increa

The phenomenon of polarization imprint consisting of the development of a preferential polarization state in ferroelectric films is known as one of the major issues impacting the development of high density ferroelectric memories. According to the commonly accepted scenario, the imprint is related to the charge injection and charge accumulation in the nearby-electrode passive layer of the ferroelectric film. Recent studies demonstrated that the coercive voltage shift induced by the imprint exhibits a nonlin

Relaxor ferroelectric thin films exhibit a drastic reduction in the dielectric constant and associated properties in the thin film form, even for thicknesses in the micron range, which are essentially infinity for the size effects typically investigated in conventional ferroelectrics. In order to investigate this phenomenon, the material system Lead Scandium Tantalum (PST) was fabricated by a Sol-Gel technique using mixed acetate and alkoxide precursors. The positional order of the "B" site species was tail

The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of two-dimensional electrostatic assembly of Au nanocrystals are examined on poly-L-lysine (pLys) modified gold electrodes. The surface preparation for the nanoparticle deposition involved the self-assembly of a monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid on the electrode surface, followed by the electrostatic deposition of pLys from aqueous solution. The polyelectrolyte layer acts as the electrostatic anchor for the Au particles. Electrostatically stabilised Au

In this paper we present our latest developments in high precision positioning and handling systems operating inside an SEM. The Laboratory in Scanning Electron Microscope concept (LAB-in-SEM) is proposed along with a description of our piezodriven manipulators. Nano-material testing such as in-situ indentation and scratch have been conduct with our systems and are briefly related here. Finally, the preliminary tests of the tele-operated assembly of carbon nanotubes on AFM tips are described. These results w

The analysis of the dynamic behavior of power transmission line and telecommunication towers is of interest in protection and EMC studies related to lightning. Usually, time-domain surge impedance is used to characterize tower dynamic behavior. The main drawback in the definition of such surge impedance is that it is dependent on the excitation waveshape and there is no consensus on the current waveshape to be used. Also, there is no consensus on the unique definition of the involved voltage. This paper exp

The behavior of dielectric loss in SrTiO3 thin films at different microwave frequencies under the dc bias voltage applied is analyzed. Two types of differently processed SrTiO3 thin films (as deposited and oxygen-annealed) deposited by the pulse laser deposition technique onto MgO single crystal substrate are investigated. The half-wave microstrip resonator with the resonance frequencies being 8 and 16 GHz at the first and second resonance modes respectively was used for the microwave characterization of th

Light Induced Chemical Vapour Deposition (LICVD) of titanium dioxide thin films is studied in this work. It is shown that this technique enables to deposit locally and selectively a chosen crystalline phase with a precise controlled thickness at low substrate temperature, allowing even the use of polymer substrates. A home made LICVD reactor was set up, consisting of a main chamber in which the substrate was placed on a temperature controlled plate and could be irradiated perpendicularly through a window by
