Invisibility Conditions in Metasurfaces and Their Relationships to Bound States in the Continuum

Résumé

A metasurface is constituted of an array of scattering particles arranged within a two-dimensional lattice. By tuning the physical parameters of both the particles and the lattice, it is possible to engineer the electromagnetic response of the metasurface. In this work, we are specifically interested in modeling and controlling the angular scattering response of a metasurface illuminated by an obliquely impinging plane wave with arbitrary polarization.

Polarisation (optique)

La polarisation est une propriété qu'ont les ondes vectorielles (ondes qui peuvent osciller selon plus d'une orientation) de présenter une répartition privilégiée de l'orientation des vibrations qui les composent. Les ondes électromagnétiques, telles que la lumière, ou les ondes gravitationnelles ont ainsi des propriétés de polarisation. Les ondes mécaniques transverses dans les solides peuvent aussi être polarisées. Cependant, les ondes longitudinales (telles que les ondes sonores) ne sont pas concernées.

Diffusion Rayleigh

La diffusion Rayleigh est un mode de diffusion des ondes, par exemple électromagnétiques ou sonores. Elle opère lorsque la longueur d'onde est beaucoup plus grande que la taille des particules diffusantes. On parle de diffusion élastique, car cela se fait sans variation d'énergie, autrement dit l'onde conserve la même longueur d'onde. Elle est nommée d'après John William Strutt Rayleigh, qui en a fait la découverte.

Light scattering by particles

Light scattering by particles is the process by which small particles (e.g. ice crystals, dust, atmospheric particulates, cosmic dust, and blood cells) scatter light causing optical phenomena such as the blue color of the sky, and halos. Maxwell's equations are the basis of theoretical and computational methods describing light scattering, but since exact solutions to Maxwell's equations are only known for selected particle geometries (such as spherical), light scattering by particles is a branch of computational electromagnetics dealing with electromagnetic radiation scattering and absorption by particles.
