This paper presents the development of a tunable filter based on acoustic resonators with very large electroacoustic coupling. The implemented filter consists in an in-line topology where the acoustic resonators are coupled through variable capacitors (varactors). The filter is centered at 1GHz with 10 MHz bandwidth and is formed by four resonators and eleven varactors that allow the control of individual resonant frequency of the resonators, the coupling between resonators, and the input/output matching. T

Employing the three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) topology for the LLC resonant DC-DC converter and utilizing the integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) has enabled realization of a MW-level direct current transformer (DCT). Due to the use of three-level modulation only for soft-start and current limiting and two-level modulation in normal operation, design of static and dynamic voltage balancing snubbers is not trivial. While snubber capacitors in parallel with each IGCT ensure dynamic voltage

The Fano resonance is a widespread wave scattering phenomenon observed in many different systems, from cold atom physics, to electromagnetics, electronic circuits, and acoustics. It is characterized by a very sharp and asymmetric scattering cross-section spectrum that switches from a zero to a maximum value for two close by frequencies. Such extraordinary feature has established Fano resonances as the basic principle for many applications including efficient sources and emitters [1], switches [2], interfero

This paper presents a noise reduction technique for Terahertz imaging based on modulating the THz source in order to transpose the signal at the output of the rectifier at a higher frequency where there is no 1/f noise and then filtering with a high Q bandpass filter centred at the modulation frequency. The filtering circuit, based on a 16-path passive switched capacitor (SC) bandpass filter, is modeled analytically. The presented technique is implemented in a test chip with a 130 nm process. Measurement re

In this work, the potential of magnetron sputtered magnesium fluoride (MgF2) and MgF2 containing composite coatings for coloured solar collector glazing is investigated. Coloured thin-film interference coatings on the reverse side of the collector cover glass give solar collectors an aesthetic appearance, which facilitates their integration into the building’s envelope. Hereby, integration means that the solar collector is no longer recognisable as technical device. Moreover, its appearance is the one of an

This document concerns the deviation of the output of MilliNewton and CentoNewton force sensors from ideal ratiometric behaviour. These sensors nominally operate from a single +5 V supply voltage and, as they have no voltage regulator, their output response should be ideally "ratiometric", i.e. proportional to supply voltage, within the operating range of the used amplifier chip. However, due to the amplifier characteristics (nonlinear offset), a substantial deviation of the sensor offset (zero-load output)

This paper presents a novel tunable bandpass filter design with independent control of both the centre frequency and the bandwidth by means of analogue-series and digital-shunt MEMS capacitors. The filter is designed for operation in X and Ku bands with 4 pre-selected centre frequencies (from 10 GHz to 14 GHz) and with a bandwidth tunability of 70% (variable between 500 MHz and 1 GHz). The filter originally includes a fine frequency tuning to correct the centre frequency position that slightly and intrinsic

Multichannel sound field reproduction techniques, such as Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) and Sound Field Reconstruction (SFR), define loudspeaker filters in the frequency domain. However, in order to use these techniques in practical systems, one needs to convert these frequency-domain characteristics to practical and efficient time-domain digital filters. Additional limitation of SFR comes from the fact that it uses a numerical matrix pseudoinversion procedure, where the obtained filters are sensitive to numer

An extension of the Jot reverberator is presented, producing binaural late reverberation where the interaural coherence can be controlled as a function of frequency such that it matches the frequency-dependent interaural coherence of a reference binaural room impulse response (BRIR). The control of the interaural coherence is implemented using linear filters outside the reverberator’s recursive loop. In the absence of a reference BRIR, these filters can be calculated from an HRTF set.

A digital controller for piezoelectric motors was developed. The controller tunes the driving frequency in order to maximize the power transmitted to the motor. A maximum of power is absorbed when the resonant frequency of the mechanical and electrical part of the piezoelectric motor are equal. This frequency varies in the first place because of the applied force. The control method consists of comparing two values of the transmitted power, measured at different moments, and deciding as a function of the re

Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FDOCT) is a high speed imaging technique with high axial resolution in the micro-meter-scale range combined with a high sensitivity allowing to probe 3D volumes of weakly back- scattering biological tissues in-vivo. Phase shifting techniques allow the reconstruction of the full complex sample signal which results in an additional suppression of unwanted auto-correlated distortion as well as an extended depth range. Current complex FDOCT realizations introduce the

Thin film piezoelectric materials offer a number of advantages in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), due to the large motions that can be generated, often with low hysteresis, the high available energy densities, as well as high sensitivity sensors with wide dynamic ranges, and low power requirements. This paper reviews the literature in this field, with an emphasis on the factors that impact the magnitude of the available piezoelectric response. For non-ferroelectric piezoelectrics such as ZnO and AlN,

In current tokamaks and, in particular, in future larger devices such as ITER, the control of neo-classical tearing modes (NTM) is essential for achieving high performance in terms of the beta limit. A commonly used scheme for NTM stabilization consists in driving a helical current at the resonance surface of interest with electron-cyclotron-current-drive. Depending on the ratio between the magnetic island size and the RF beam width, complete stabilization of the NTM will only be achieved with deep RF power

Power line communication (PLC) is a well-known technique for data transmission over low-voltage power lines. The PLC signals have frequency bandwidth of about 1-30 MHz and they may cause electromagnetic interferences with services operating in the same frequency range. The regulation of electromagnetic radiation from PLC signals is currently subject of investigation in various international standardization bodies. This paper proposes a technique aiming at reducing the electromagnetic field radiated by indoo

Direct observation of polarization distribution at nanoscale by scanning force microscopy across partially etched Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 film ferroelectric capacitors with size 2x3 mum and preferential orientation (111) has revealed an anomalous polarization pattern characterized by polarization inversion in the center of the capacitor. This self-structured pattern is reproducible and independent on the spontaneous polarization orientation, but strongly influenced by the film texture and capacitor size. In particular

This paper proposes two frequency based methods for parallel active filtering of current harmonics in utility grids. Active Filter (AF) reference prediction and AF current control are the two key-points to obtain high performances. This paper deals with the AF reference prediction. The two proposed methods are based on the Fourier Series and its implementation on DSP. They belong to two prediction structures: the open-loop structure which predicts the reference currents from the load currents, and the close

This paper reports on the modeling and key design aspects of an innovative MEMS device: the suspended-gate MOSFET (SG-MOSFET). Based on the coupled-electromechanical equations describing the suspended gate actuation, we present the investigation of the pull-in voltages and of the capacitance switching and tuning ranges for RF applications. A quasi-analytical model and is developed for the gate-to-substrate capacitance of the SG-MOSFET and then, validated by numerical simulation. A SPICE macro-model using po

We have examined the diameter response of rat femoral artery segments in the presence and absence of endothelium to changes in flow rate. The segments were isolated, mounted on microcannulae, maintained at 37 degrees C, and perfused at 90 mmHg with Tyrode's solution. The external arterial diameter was measured using video-microscopy. The mean control diameter was 741+/-22 microm (mean+/-SEM,n=7). The arteries were preconstricted to 75+/-1% of the control diameter with a superfusion of 1 microM norepinephrin

Dielectric breakdown of (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O-3(PLZT) film capacitors with Pt and SrRuO3 electrodes, in its initial or virgin state and after voltage cycling that causes polarization fatigue, is studied by constant-current measurements. It is shown that for different types of PLZT capacitors, the breakdown onset is controlled by the critical charge flown through the film (charge to breakdown) rather than the voltage applied to the capacitor. The charge to breakdown for the asymmetrical Pt/SrRuO3/PLZT/Pt capacitor

Role of Pt and SRO electrodes in polarization fatigue of PLZT film ferroelectric capacitors is studied. We show that asymmetrical Pt/SRO/PLZT/Pt structure exhibits unusual dependence of the endurance of switching polarization on the driving ac electric field amplitude. Specifically, for high ac electric field amplitude it shows a good switching endurance similar to SRO/PLZT/SRO capacitors, whereas for amplitude lower than 80 kV/cm a pronounced polarization fatigue similar to that of conventional Pt/PLZT/Pt
