The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wea ...

We introduce a computational pipeline for simulating and designing C-shells, a new class of planar-to-spatial deployable linkage structures. A C-shell is composed of curved flexible beams connected at rotational joints that can be assembled in a stress-fre ...

Dynamic modeling of folding joints is critical for predicting dynamic behavior, optimizing design parameters, and developing control strategies for origami robots and machines. Although kinematics of the folded joints exists, little research describes thei ...

This paper presents a novel planar four-bar linkage compliant mechanism (called 4-RCC) based on four flexure-based Remote Center of Compliance (RCC) pivots. With particular configurations and dimensions, the beam shortening of the RCC pivots can compensate ...

Elastic surfaces that morph between multiple geometrical configurations are of significant engineering value, with applications ranging from the deployment of space-based PV arrays, the erection of temporary shelters, and the realization of flexible displa ...

The present invention concerns a method for encoding a given 3D shape into a target 2D linkage. The method comprises: (a) providing an initial 2D surface; and (b) defining on the initial 2D surface an auxetic pattern of geometric elements planarly linked b ...

Sensor system (1) comprising a frame (306) supporting a force-sensing tip (310) arranged to generate a signal based upon a force applied by said force-sensing tip (310) to a material to be tested, characterised in that said system (1) further comprises:- an ...

This paper investigates the linkages and influences between the open innovation paradigm and e-government research. To this end, an analysis of the e-government literature is carried out to understand how open innovation has been interpreted by e-governmen ...

Miniaturisation will be the key challenge for the next decade in numerous industrial fields, such as microelectronics, optics and biomedical engineering. Although most of their products already achieve footprints of some square millimeters, the trend towar ...

Deployable structures are widely used in space applications such as solar arrays and antennas. Recently, inspired by origami, more deployable structures have been developed. This paper outlined a novel design scheme for deployable structures by taking a pl ...

The allocation of resources for research is increasingly based on so-called ‘bibliometrics’. Scientists arenow deemed to be successful on the sole condition that their work be abundantly cited. This world-wide trendappears to enjoy support not only by gran ...

The machine tool industry is a well established, old and extremely important branch of today's manufacturing industry. With the ongoing globalization and the resulting increase of competition in this industry, the manufacturers have to push their technolog ...

If you need to design ultra-high precision devices for mechanisms with multiple axes there are not a lot of ways leading around flexure-based joints. Using this type of articulations totally eliminates backlash and friction and is, by this, providing an ac ...

Collaborative synchronous writing tools like Google Docs and Etherpad let multiple users edit the same document and see each others edits in near real-time to simplify collaboration and avoid merge-conflicts. These tools are used extensively across many do ...

Parallel kinematics structures currently find increasing industrial applications, particularly in packaging and assembly. With very few exceptions, machine-tools with parallel kinematics are limited to mechanisms with three or six degrees of freedom. Moreo ...

A New Look at Civic Design reflects on the nature of the various crises facing the very idea of democracy today, explicitly in relation to climate change - namely mass extinctions, water scarcity and overabundance, and in general widespread and increasing ...

The parallel kinematics machine tool HITA-STT (Stiffness Tracking Technology) developed by Willemin–Machines S.A. and EPFL is now able to machine. This machine can reach accelerations of 5g. It is characterized by a tilt of ± 60° around the B-axis. This ch ...

This paper addresses the mean-field behavior of large-scale systems of parallel servers with a processor sharing service discipline when arrivals are Poisson and jobs have general service time distributions when an SQ(d) routing policy is used. Under this ...

This study provides a novel approach for designing a rotary hexapod with a single actuator and definable motion of a platform. Hexapod is a parallel structure mechanism with six legs and six degrees of freedom (DoF) of an end-effector. It is not an underac ...

Compliant mechanisms are of great interest in precision engineering. In this paper we propose a higher order continuation method to help their rigid-body kinematic design. The method helps to investigate the choice of a mechanism configuration through the ...
